This week: Two weeks.

Things have settled down a bit in RPI land, but there are still some pretty significant changes. The biggest changes usually tend to involve teams that aren’t getting into the tournament without winning their conferences, but they’re interesting nevertheless, and there are a couple of teams that may have put themselves into the conversation for at large spots. So, this week is a comparison of RPI two weeks ago to RPI today, with – as usual – all data taken from Jerry Palm’s collegerpi.com.

Teams with greatest RPI improvements

1. Wis-Milwaukee (77 spots, 226 to 149)
2. Western Illinois (63 spots, 291 to 228)
3t. Lamar (61 spots, 216 to 155)
3t. Missouri St (61 spots, 224 to 163)
5. Kansas St (60 spots, 94 to 34)
6t. Ark-Little Rock (55 spots, 192 to 137)
6t. Mississippi (55 spots, 154 to 99)
8. Oklahoma St (54 spots, 91 to 37)
9t. Drexel (53 spots, 207 to 154)
9t. IUPUI (53 spots, 280 to 227)

K State and Oklahoma State really have benefited from conference play, and both also have much-improved SOS – from 97 to 34 for K State and from 305 to 166 (which still stinks) for Oklahoma State.

In case you’re wondering, the big winners among the current RPI top 25 over the last two weeks were Baylor, which has jumped 23 spots from 31 to 8, Nebraska, which bumped up 14 spots from 42 to 18, Vandy, which went from 38 to 25 (13 spots) and Duke, which also moved 13 spots from 25 to 12.

Teams with worst RPI declines

1. Northeastern (103 spots, (105 to 208)
2. Florida A&M (89 spots, (146 to 235)
3. Southern Miss (75 spots, (141 to 216)
4. Savannah St (67 spots, (223 to 290)
5t. Northwestern St (66 spots, (222 to 288)
5t. St. Francis-PA (66 spots, (193 to 259)
7. Mercer (52 spots, (252 to 304)
8t. Akron (50 spots, (168 to 218)
8t. Wichita St (50 spots, (162 to 212)
8t. Wofford (50 spots, (147 to 197)

None of these teams had a real shot at an at-large bid before, and it’s even for them worse now.

The big losers in the January 9 top 25 RPI were Seton Hall, which dropped 28 spots from 24 to 52, Iowa State, which went down 13 spots from 20 to 33 and Penn State, which dropped from 11 to 23 (12 spots).

And now, the boring teams that haven’t changed their ranks at all, listed in order of their current (and previous) RPI ranks

1. Tennessee (Change in raw RPI of 0.0105)
2. Connecticut (-0.0138)
10. Oklahoma (-0.0014)
35. Utah (-0.0014)
53. St. John's (0.0066)
90. Miami-Ohio (0.0009)
199. Winthrop (-0.0017)
243. North Dakota St (0.0036)
306. St. Francis-NY (-0.0004)
310. Tennessee-Martin (-0.0035)
333. Winston-Salem St (0.0083)

Normally a change as big as the ones Tennessee and UConn had would have a huge effect on RPI rank, but the Lady Vols already were on top, and UConn was well ahead of Rutgers and Maryland. RU and Maryland would have been on this list, but they switched places after the Rutgers game last night, which slightly reduced RU’s RPI and increased Maryland’s. St. Francis-NY wins the prize for the most stable RPI and RPI rank combined.
