Arkansas projects senior Brittney Vaughn at point, sophomore Charity Ford at guard and junior Ayana Brereton on the wing. Inside, senior all-America candidate Lauren Ervin and junior Whitney Jones start at the posts.

“It’s her [Vaughn's] job to lose, but certainly Shanita comes in with a pretty spectacular billing and great expectations,” Collen said. “She’s in there battling, she’s got a great feel for the game, and she’s going to push Britney.” Both players were deferential when asked about the fight for playing time.

Arkansas outscored the University of British Columbia 27-5 in the third quarter in an easy 69-42 victory. Arkansas’s Ayana Brereton and Sarah Pfeifer led all players with 13 points and Whitney Jones collected a game-high nine rebounds.

The freshmen played well. Zachariason had 8 points and several rebounds in her first game on the perimeter while Shanita Arnold led Arkansas with 6 assists. Ashlea Williams did a nice job of backing up Lauren Ervin, who was in early foul trouble.

"You’re always pleased when you win, but we played hard and especially in the second half,” UA head coach Tom Collen said.

Arkansas went with a veteran starting lineup, and it paid off for Collen.

“We are clearly looking for some more offensive weapons, and when you consider that three of the starting five totaled about five points last year, we made some steps toward that today,” Collen said.

The first-year Lady’Back coach was referring to Brereton, Whitney Jones and Charity Ford that were role players last season for Arkansas. Today they had 31 of Arkansas’ 69 points, and Jones with 10 points and nine boards was one shy of the double-double...

...Arkansas had 36 of its 69 points off turnovers, while the Thunderbirds managed only five. For the game, Arkansas forced 35 turnovers from the former No. 1 ranked Canadian squad and picked up 20 steals.

“We’re going to have to be a better team on defense this year,” Collen said. “Some days we’re going to need to figure out ways to score, and that’s from steals and turnovers.”

The Lady Razorbacks play the Canadian National Champions tomorrow night.

Arkansas Rally Comes Up Short:

Senior Lauren Ervin scored 14 of her 19 in the second half as the University of Arkansas rallied but could not overtake the defending Canadian national champion Simon Fraser, 72-71.
