I am in desperate need of any video footage or photographs of ANY of the protests against Rene Portland. I hate to bring this back up however a very nice documentary film is being done about homophobia in sports .

All the center court video footage from PSU suddenly disappeared when Portland "disappeared" go figure, Please if anyone has any video footage or photographs of any protests, even if it is just women wearing lavender menace shirts would be great. Please forward me anything you may have and please spread the word to anyone you know that may have some of this info.

Feel free to contact me at anytime
dochoops@sbcglobal.net

Thanks,
CD

Hopefully, you are getting responses. I think you might have gotten more if you had given it a different name. Maybe if you looked back to the threads that talked about the protests, you would find some people who were involved and you could pm them. I am not sure how to find these threads, but I do know bluewolfi posted to them so maybe by looking at her posts to the wcbb forum you would find the links.

Good luck. I would love to see a good documentary get made on this story.

But I am desperate! (not really) You are right, that may be an idea re: subject line. Thanks for the Suggestions and possible lead to "bluewolfie"
The documentary is in production and should be awesome.
Thanks again for your response, appreciated!

You may have some of these saved, but this is what I found in a quick search.

A lot of the links to the newspaper stories probably are not active anymore, but hopefully this is helpful. I think you can usually order copies of old articles and photos directly from newspapers.

I remember there was an organized protest at Michigan State that season too, but I did not see the article on it. I think shock6666 was involved with getting purple t-shirts and may have more information. You can try sending a pm.

You might also post on the AfterEllen.com forums asking folks if they have any information/stuff regarding that....

Also "The Advocate" magazine and "Curve" might have back issues that reference the story....

SF Library also has an extensive Gay/Lesbian archive, perhaps worth a check if any information/photos/etc....

Good luck, sounds like an interesting project.

Most Big 10 schools have a LGBT student center and many of those helped with protests. Contacting those might also be a good place top start. If they were involved, they probably have some pictures.

Sort of unrelated, but at the same time...

I was at a wedding a few weeks ago and ended up sitting with a girl from PSU. I mentioned something about Rene (not knowing to leave well-enough alone when talking to strangers) and she said, "oh, she's my sorority sister's aunt. What happened to her was soooooo unfair." Rolling Eyes

Oh my. I can complete relate to "not knowing to leave well enough alone." I have from suffered foot in mouth disease often.

There was one photo in the Michigan Daily accompanied by this article:

http://media.www.michigandaily.com/media/storage/paper851/news/2007/01/08/News/Fans-Protest.Coachs.AntiLesbian.Policies-2601555.shtml?sourcedomain=www.michigandaily.com&MIIHost=media.collegepublisher.com

You might want to contact the Daily and see if they have any unpublished photos they can provide to the project also.

1. Contact SpeakOut in a couple of weeks when school is back in session.

http://www.clubs.psu.edu/up/allies/

(That's Ed Rowe in the video (fomer President of SpeakOut) confronting Vicky Triponi (VP of Student Affairs at Penn State) after GLBT student activists found PSU President Graham Spanier's door locked to them in a march on Old Main.)

2. Search the archives of the Daily Collegian and contact the staff for permission to use the photos.

http://www.collegian.psu.edu/back_issues/back_issues.asp

Example:
http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2006/02/02-27-06tdc/02-27-06dnews-06.asp
(That's Christina Swomley, (who succeeded Ed Rowe as President of SpeakOut) at the forefront of a human chain heading to Bryce Jordan Center in protest at the last 2006 season home game.)

http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2007/02/02-22-07tdc/02-22-07dnews-06.asp
(Black Caucus President Darryl Watson leading students in a Feb. 09, 2007 march on Old Main. Black Caucus and SpeakOut were instrumental in putting pressure on Penn State's administration, in the Portland case, to make a change.)

3. Christine Barry's blog documented the protest when on Jan 05, 2006, the MSU Spartans hosted Penn State.
