Robyn Fairbanks of Utah Valley State was the Division I Independent Player of the Year. UVSU played a Division I schedule and is listed as a Division I school (though I guess they're still in their transition years?).

I'm curious if anyone knows why her 23.7 ppg scoring average (which would make her 3rd in the country) isn't listed on the NCAA Division I women's basketball statistics? Is it something to do with being in transition to Division I? Being an Independent?

Thanks,
Doc

Yes it is about the transition period.

Actually, and I suppose probably no one cares but me, but I got a response from Clint Burgi, the SID for women's basketball at Utah Valley State about this question.

Turns out it's not just about transitioning, because I know/knew other schools making the transition to Division I were having their stats counted. It's the fact that Utah Valley State is the only school to be transitioning from being a JUNIOR college to Division I.

David,
I agree that it's a shame as well. She is one of the best offensive players in the country. It's unfortunately part of our penance as the one and only "provisional" school in the NCAA. We aren't considered reclassifying or a "transitional" school because of the jump from junior college as opposed to other school's move from D-II to D-I. As far as we've come across, we are the only school to ever go from jc one year to NCAA D-I the next.

The NCAA won't recognize our stats until we become a full-fledged member of the NCAA, which is scheduled for 2009-10. Other "reclassifying"
schools (such as South Dakota State and UC Davis) that have athletes among the national leaders are recognized as a footnote on the NCAA website. We don't even receive that recognition.

Fascinating, huh? The stuff you can learn!

Doc
