A little more than 150 loyal fans showed up at the Louis Brown Athletic Center on Thursday to see the Rutgers women’s basketball team off to Cleveland and a date with Louisiana State in the Final Four.

The rally had the cozy feel of a small-town sendoff. On hand were the Scarlet Knights band, cheerleaders and a sprinkling of students and alumni. But there was no jam-packed crowd filling the arena.

The Scarlet Knights are the most stunning story of the N.C.A.A. tournament — men’s or women’s. Here’s a team that came from nowhere, a team with no seniors, a team anchored by freshmen pressed into service.
