Cougars win in a comeback! And without last year's leading scorer, too. Stanford led by 8 or 9 with 7 and change to go, IIRC. What happened? Candace with the flu? Is Newlin not back yet? No box score at ESPN yet.

No. 22 BYU upsets No. 4 Stanford 55-52
JANIE McCAULEY
Associated Press
Haley Hall banked in a go-ahead 3-pointer with 16.5 seconds left and the shot clock expiring and Stanford then missed three shots from close range, lifting No. 22 BYU to a 55-52 upset of the fourth-ranked Cardinal in the second round of the preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament on Monday night.
The Cougars (2-0) used an 18-2 run over the final 7:23 to steal a rare win from Stanford on its home court in Maples Pavilion. BYU advances to play at Baylor on Thursday night in the semifinals of the 16-team event.
"I'm excited for our program. This is a big win for us," BYU coach Jeff Judkins said. "Stanford is a program others try to match. I'm proud of my team because they never quit. As a coach, you always want that and you believe in that."
Brooke Smith had 13 points and eight rebounds for Stanford (1-1), which couldn't survive a sloppy, inconsistent performance. Two-time reigning Pac-10 Player of the Year Candice Wiggins matched her career-low with seven points and missed a layin in the waning seconds.
Hall scored 15 points to lead BYU and the Cougars made Stanford work for every shot and kept Smith and Kristen Newlin from having their way in the paint.

Make things more interesting in the WNIT. It was set for a Stanford/Baylor and Purdue/St. John's Final Four, but only two made it that far.
A Baylor/Purdue game could be interesting, given that the two teams were making plans to play the second half of a home and home this season, but neither Mulkey or Curry would give in and go on the road the first year.
I am shocked to see Stanford out.

I think it's still too early for Stanford. BYU is a tough team and I think they're underrated. They play tough defense and I think that frazzled Stanford. Perhaps they were also looking ahead too soon.
Anyways, Stanford has a tendency to drop a game that doesn't make sense, here or there. This will be a big wake-up call for them and will come back stronger.
You Ariz. St. fans, I wouldn't get my hopes up too soon.

Umm, havn't we beat the them the last fews? Why not again this year? |
You have a point, but it was Stanford that nearly knocked out LSU for a spot in the Final Four. ASU has a lot to prove after bowing out in the second round of the NCAA tourney last year.

I think a lot of teams have to learn to stop looking past the Mountain West Conference.
Utah was one free throw from knocking off Maryland.

Agreed. I've seen some tough teams come out of that conference that have surprised in tournaments past. Looks like New Mexico though is having of a slow start though.

Agreed. But-- BYU lost their all-around best player, Utah lost their best two if not three, and UNM has never been that good away from the Pit (I believe their best away win last year was Texas). So I wasn't expecting this year's MWC to look as good as last year's. Perhaps I was mistaken.
On the other hand, Stanford lost early last year to Minnesota. Augury? Nope.
I repeat: is Newlin healthy?
