Senior Jasmina Ilic led the way with 23 points in 25 minutes - including 5-of-8 from beyond the 3-point line. I was even more impressed with the way she played defense - her three steals don't tell the whole story.

The three freshmen expected to see a lot of playing time this year also impressed today. 6-3 Aija Putnina played like a veteran for the second-straight game and was second in scoring for CU with 12 points and added seven boards in 20 minutes.

Whitney Houston and Candace Rucker still have some learning to do, but dang - we ain't seen athletes like this pair in - well - ever.

Here are my thoughts on the game:

Colorado won its second and final exhibition game of the season defeating the School of Mines 73-37 Sunday afternoon in Boulder. Senior Jasmina Ilic led the Buffs with 23 points in 25 minutes. She lit it up from 3-point range, hitting 5 of 8.

Starting post players Jackie McFarland and Kara Richards were saddled with foul troubles that opened up opportunities for Aija Putnina, Anna Nedovic and Caley Dow. Putnina was the first player off the bench and once again looked good. She is very versatile with an ability to handle and see the court like a guard, but can post up very well. She would end up with 12 points and 7 rebounds.

Making a more favorable impression than in the first game was freshman point Whitney Houston. Today she played under control and didn't commit many turnovers. She scored 9 points.

Fellow freshman - also from Memphis - Candace Rucker looked good as she did in the first game. She is very athletic and is a disruptive on defense.

CU continues to focus on defense as a team with an emphasis on swarming the ball when it's appropriate. Today they forces Mines into 33 turnovers.

Colorado opens the regular season next weekend with home games against San Francisco and Vanderbilt.

More on the game and the exciting freshmen:

http://www.buffzone.com/news/2006/nov/06/womens-basketball/

"Freshman Aija Putnina showed she was more than capable of playing center and forward, freshman Candace Rucker changed the course of the game when her team was struggling in the first half and freshman Whitney Houston will challenge for playing time at point guard."
