The "general fan" would presumably just want to see whichever are the best 2 teams, to give themselves the best chance of seeing a competitive and high quality game.

Personally I'm not remotely enthused about the prospect of either of the 2 remaining teams winning another championship, but from what I saw today from the alternatives, I can also admit it's pretty clear that we have the 2 correct championship contenders participating in the final game.

I was hoping the game would be more exciting than this. If the championship game is between the Gamecocks and Huskies, other than their respective fan bases, I don’t expect much of the nation to bother tuning in. Myself included. The SC vs. UConn storyline just isn’t that exciting.

“We want something else!” - Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce.

Which of the four possible matchups do you think would have appealed most to the general public (i.e., outside of the respective fan bases)?

There were four possible outcomes for the championship game. The SC/UConn is the least interesting. If it were Texas vs., or UCLA vs., there could have been the possibility of a different champion. A better storyline, even if they had lost.

The least interesting to you.

It’s easily the biggest ratings getter as of the options.

I disagree. Why would the general women’s basketball fan want to see these two teams win another championship? I would have enjoyed UCLA or USC in the final as they’re now in the Big Ten, while Texas in the final would have been more unique. SC and UConn? Meh.

Because the casual person has heard of Paige Bueckers, UConn, Dawn Staley, and South Carolina.

People didn’t watch last year because Iowa was new, they watched because they knew who Clark was.

yeeeeah the take on ratings and UConn vs. South Carolina being uninteresting to the general fan is quite the view point to have.

this has got to be the most interesting of the possibilities we could have had.

UCLA and Texas have significant advantages in market size over UConn and South Carolina. That would offset the familiarity advantage and leave the ratings about the same either way.

And yet both Scar and UConn draw bigger crowds to games. Plus UConn has no competition from the NY Metro or Boston markets.

How about not starting the game at 9:40 PM when the old and the young go to bed?

The women's final didn't start that late. It started at 3:00 on Sunday afternoon.

This is a CT-UCLA thread. The final game is another thread. The UConn-UCLA game started at about 9:45 PM.
