Caitlin Clark helps WNBA shatter draft viewership record

The Caitlin Clark experience delivered another television milestone as ESPN's coverage of the WNBA draft on Monday night averaged a record 2.45 million viewers.
The audience was more than four times as many viewers when compared to the 2023 draft, which drew 572,000. The previous draft record was 601,000 in 2004, when UConn's Diana Taurasi went No. 1 overall. |

Even apart from the Clark hype, this was a fantastic telecast. The league really stuck the landing on this one. It felt important, the analysis was fun, the fashion highlights were smart, and the entire show felt like a massive step up from year’s past.

Kudos to the abc/espn team for having cameras everywhere. All access. Made that one BAM venue seem bigger than it really is.

Yeah, this is the first time I have watched a WNBA draft and felt that it was smart, professional, fun, and worth the time to watch. Kudos to the W for rising with the tide!

Highlight of the show: Holly wasn’t frantically running from Table to table trying to connect with the players’ families.

4/15 Countdown ESPN 1,107,000 .25
5/1 Brittney Griner Interview ABC 1,974,000 .23
The decimal rating is percentage of people from ages 18 to 49 in the sample who were watching on average. That number was .58 for the draft itself. The other figure is average viewership estimated based on the sample. |

Caitlin Clark debut is most-watched WNBA game since 2001
Quote: |
Tuesday’s Fever-Sun WNBA Opening Night game, featuring the professional debut of Fever and former Iowa G Caitlin Clark, averaged 2.13 million viewers across ESPN2 (2.12M) and ESPN Deportes (13K) — the largest WNBA game audience in nearly 23 years, since Sparks-Comets on NBC Memorial Day 2001 (2.44M), and the league’s top audience ever on cable. |
Interestingly…

Clark’s coattails did not carry as far as one might have expected. Tuesday’s Mercury-Aces nightcap averaged just 464,000 viewers, retaining less than a quarter of its lead-in. |

2.12 million is amazing, the NBA playoffs was 4.8.
Not surprising - the new fans haven’t seen other players yet, it was on at 10pm. I saw a clip from a sports show of guys who were tuning in for CC, and their take was “Connecticut has a lot of great talented players” one of them seemed to like Bonner a lot (though didn’t know her name)
Yet it’s still the same as the WNBA post season of last year (which was the league’s highest in years). Which does show overall interest is increasing, even with Clark as the obvious catalyst

I am really curious to see how the Fever/NY ABC game draws. Being in ABC should garner a bigger number than the ESPN3 opener but I wonder if the negative reactions to Clark’s early performance will be a hindrance to today’s ratings.

In general, A certain percentage of drop-off can be credited to the game times. West coast games don’t start til 10 out east. Folks have to get up for school/work or are tired & just want to go to bed. Or, there isn’t any interest in the teams playing.

Very true. The 440k is actually really good for a 10pm game on ESPN2. Those sometimes draw under 150k so it’s actually a great number in its own right. I just wish the drop off wasn’t so severe.

I bet it's lower. The Fever is just not a good team. It's hard to watch if the product is bad. Like how the Lakers not a good team and yet they had national tv games.
