Two Columbia Lions in a W/NBA draft at 34 and 35. Probably the first time for two Lions since Jim McMillian and Heyward Dotson 1970.

Now, the reality begins. Who is going to make the cut? A serious problem in the WNBA with limited roster spot. And I feel bad for these young players to be honest.

A very happy Columbia fan was belting out the fight song after those two picks, it was amazing and this is what the third round is made for.

When they were showing... I think it was her highlights but it might have been Leite's... Fair was looking up at the screen with an expression that read "I could take her".

Low-key I've always hoped a prospect would show up to the draft just to watch and then get selected and be like "'sup Cathy I'm here, gimme my jersey" and go take their podium moment AND I GOT TO SEE IT HAPPEN IT WAS SO COOL

The Iowa contingent was super-hyped for her- I'm not sure if they expected her to get picked, or if they didn't expect event management to let her take the stage and get the official invitee treatment even if she was picked.

Apparently the ESPN App was only streaming the draft in Spanish, at least to start with

Clearly a seven-player draft ...

Three sure things, from today's perspective: Clark, Cardoso, Brink

One very close to sure thing: Jackson

Two rotation players who might develop: Edwards, Reese

One Greg Bibb pick: Sheldon, who might be better than I think.

After that, the darts start flying. Hey, maybe Alissa Pili is the next Charles Barkley (he wasn't even 6-5 and was one of the best power forwards in the NBA). Maybe Brynna Maxwell is the real deal. Maybe Angel Jackson (a star in high school) is quality post reserve.

But looking down the road at expansion, if 2024 was a deep draft, then with 14 teams, half the franchises will get a good or decent player each year, and half will not improve. Now if future drafts are better, all good; if future drafts are like 2021, the quality of the product will slowly degrade.

WNBA Draft Fashion Has Come a Long Way From ‘Most Athletic Accountants’ Era

https://frontofficesports.com/wnba-draft-fashion-reese-clark/

Quote:
“We were looking like some of the most athletic accountants you’ve ever seen,” 2012 No. 3 pick Devereaux Peters tells Front Office Sports.

Peters headed to the draft after surpassing 1,000 points at Notre Dame, and says she didn’t know what to wear for the “very, very, very strict dress code.” A fellow 2012 draftee, Samantha Prahalis, was even forced to put on stockings under her dress, Peters says. (Photos from draft night indeed show Prahalis wearing stockings.)

Most of the foreign players selected last night are 19; Fair is 22 (and not the oldest taken last night). Given typical athletic development, that's a big difference. Always the risk with French players that they'll never be around anyway, but hopefully the teams have more information on that likelihood than we do. I was surprised Borlase stayed on the board as long as she did. Already significant pro and international experience, and production, at 19 - plus Australians generally do show up for the WNBA when asked.

I don't think any of Atlanta's foreign draftees are coming this year, but if any of them were they might well make the roster anyway. Not exactly packed on the end of that bench.

It seems odd that Puoch would come for the draft then not stick around for the season

The Dream might not want her to. Often a lot of discussion about that before the draft, and agreement to what the team wants can be part of getting drafted in the first place.

To say all eyes were on the draft is an understatement, and the athletes served up beauty inspo while joining forces with some of the biggest teams on the WNBA roster.

So the 2024 WNBA draft on Monday evening was, of course, a highly anticipated moment. And it didn't just reveal which players are headed to which teams — the evening also cemented many of the the young athletes as style stars.

From the online site of the TV "infotainment" show, Access Hollywood...

Quote:
Though others noted that Clark will likely earn millions from her endorsement deals with companies including Nike, the pay gap drew widespread outrage and confusion on social media.

"Today" co-host Hoda Kotb was among the famous faces to weigh in on the issue, admitting on X that she thought the numbers she read must have been a mistake.

"She had the highest ratings, her teams and the Final Four had the highest ratings — higher than the World Series, higher than the NBA," she said of Clark on Tuesday’s show. "So I was like, what is she going to get paid? Because finally, you can get a real paycheck. Then I saw it and was like, ‘This can't be right."

A bunch of people that don't understand basic economics. The WNBA doesn't turn much of a profit whatsoever and wouldn't even still be a thing without the subsidization of the NBA. Hopefully this is in the process of changing and within a few years these players can start earning some big paydays..

How many games has Hoda Kotb been too? How many times has she had a WNBA player on her show? How many times before Clark has she talked about women's basketball?

Everything about Clark is now a discourse. Laughing

Good lord, if she fails to live up to the hype. I've never seen this kind of pressure. It's insane and to a certain extent unfair. But whatever. It is, what it is.
