The Ledge, PFT, will join some former NBA dude at FIBA HQ to conduct the draw for the Women's & Men's 2024 Olympic tournaments in a few hours ... (2pm US Eastern, I believe) ...

United States in the group of near death with Belgium, Germany, and Japan. Canada, Nigeria, Australia, and France are in a tough group. By comparison, Spain, Puerto Rico, China, and Serbia seems like an easy group.

It will matter to Germany. Not so much to the US.

That's about what was expected, right? All 7 current WNBA players, George/Tolo/Jackson were always getting in, which only leaves Borlase and Madgen. Always thought Borlase was going after her WNBL numbers and actually getting some minutes in the qualifier in February. |

Opals are going to ride LJ until she drops dead. Except, unlike the United States, they don't really have a path to a medal without her, so they kinda have no choice.

Yeah, very much what was expected (based on previous selection trends rather than based on who is playing good basketball right now)
Relieved that we managed to find room for both Melbourne & Borlase. They're both obvious picks, but with our youth-phobic selectors I was still slightly nervous about both making it.
The rest was our classic copy & paste M.O.

Yeah, pretty much.

Won't matter. There is no way Taurasi will bow out of the Olympics.

It's wild to your boy how nobody has smoke for Jackson playing in her fifth Olympics. Literally came out of retirement to take somebody else spot.

Important difference to the DT situation in that there is aren't other players who are clearly more deserving of LJ's spot. It's distressingly (as a reflection of the depth of aussie bigs) un-wild.
(And if there was a better player waiting in the wings, it would likely be Cayla George making way for her rather than LJ)

You don't think there's a problem with that?

The US could field three teams in the Olympics and have at least two teams playing in the final four slots, if not all three!!
C'mon! Let's do apples to apples instead of apples to koala's.

The closest thing to a problem I have with the front court is George being there instead of Garbin. But the guard spots are our real concern.
Very relieved to see that Talbot was back on court for LA today.
[ETA] I'll add that I don't think LJ ever planned on being in the Opals team when she started playing again after many years out of the game. I doubt she even expected to reach the WNBL. Her return to basketball escalated quickly, and took nearly everyone by surprise - herself included.

It is apples-to-apples, from my point of view. Your premise is that it's more egregious for the US because they have more depth, and can win without Taurasi. I reject that premise; either she's too old, or she's not. My rebuttal is, Australia's not entitled to medal at the Olympics. Let them send the best twelve they have under the age of forty, and whatever happens, happens.

I don't care how old she is. Term limits, baby, term limits!!!!!!
If we're not going to have an upper age for our presidential candidates, why should we have one for our Olympic team?
It just seems to me to be shameful to continue playing when it's a dream of so many, and they are actually better than you are at this stage of your career, yet because of politics, you keep getting selected. There are at least 4-5 other guards that should have had her slot (and Bird's for that matter) in the last 2-3 Olympics.
But hey, if I can't make the rules, I'll bitch about them!!!!!!!!!!
And maybe your POV needs to be changed??

How do you not realize that what you just said also applies to Jackson?
I feel like you're making the mistake of thinking that I am defending Taurasi being on USWNT. I think they both should be put out to pasture.

Jackson just scored 21 points in a WNBL Finals game and won her 7th WNBL championship, as a starter. She scored 30 points in the bronze medal game at the most recent World Cup. If you lined up the Opals squad against a wall and picked teams, she sure as hell isn't getting picked 12th. This is where the glaring difference is between her and Taurasi. Take all the ages off the bios and Jackson is going to the Olympics anyway.
The issue with the US letting veterans play until death is that things happen like Courtney Vandersloot deciding she's better off playing 5 minutes for Hungary and making more money with her new passport than 'waiting her turn' to actually play for the US. The issue with Jackson going to the Olympics is... Lauren Scherf doesn't get to go? It ain't the same. |
