Why was the score like it was?

Answer: because Mississippi Valley State is a pretty poor mid-major program right now, and is regularly getting pummeled by most opponents it has played thus far. And because South Carolina is one of the top WCBB programs right now.

The "Devilettes" have almost a SEC conference schedule - they already lost to LSU 109-47 earlier this season, and are scheduled to play Mississippi, Texas A&M, Mississippi State, and Alabama in consecutive games later this season.

Why did South Carolina play against an opponent like Mississippi Valley State?

Answer: because Stanford stepped out of their arranged end of the home and home schedule with South Carolina (suggested due to their moving from the Pac-12 to the ACC, although that move doesn't take place until next season), and a scheduled opponent (Charleston Southern) was also removed from the schedule for reasons unknown to me, and Dawn Staley had to scramble to replace those games with new opponents.

She did by scheduling Mississippi Valley State and Morgan State at the very last minute. But had everything gone according to expected plan regarding the 2023-2024 schedule, the above game would have never happened today.....
