NEW YORK, Jan. 12, 2022 – AT&T WNBA All-Star 2023 will be played in Las Vegas at Michelob ULTRA Arena, home of the defending WNBA Champion Las Vegas Aces, on Saturday, July 15 (and will be the centerpiece of two full days packed with WNBA activities), the league announced today. This marks the third time Las Vegas will host the WNBA’s midseason showcase, most recently in 2021.
In addition to the AT&T WNBA All-Star Game, the WNBA will look to host its “WNBA Live” fan festival, now in its second year. An exciting, interactive event open to the public, “WNBA Live” will provide fans an opportunity to experience the intersection of the WNBA, entertainment and culture leading up to the AT&T WNBA All-Star Game. Details for “WNBA Live” will be announced in the future.
“The WNBA is thrilled to bring AT&T WNBA All-Star 2023, to Las Vegas, a city that showed such incredible support for the Aces and the WNBA throughout last season, especially during the WNBA Finals presented by YouTube TV when the Aces brought the city its first professional sports championship,” said WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. “This will be the third AT&T WNBA All-Star Game to take place in Las Vegas, where we had memorable experiences in 2019 and 2021. And I can’t think of a better location for us to host our second annual “WNBA Live” interactive fan event that will give WNBA fans two days of incredible opportunities to engage with our brand and partners who have stepped up to support the WNBA.”
On Friday, July 14, some of the league’s biggest and brightest stars will display their talents at the 2023 edition of the WNBA 3-Point Contest in partnership with PepsiCo and WNBA Skills Challenge.
“We’re excited to once again host the league’s signature showcase event in the sports and entertainment capital of the world,” said Aces president Nikki Fargas. “Las Vegas has showed up and showed out for the Aces and the WNBA since our first season, and we are looking forward to welcoming fans from around the world back to Michelob ULTRA Arena for another incredible celebration of the best that women’s basketball has to offer.”
Tickets for the 2023 AT&T All-Star Game on July 15 as well as tickets for the WNBA 3-Point Contest in partnership with PepsiCo and WNBA Skills Challenge on July 14, will go on sale to the public on Thursday, January 19 at 10 am PT. Tickets may be purchased by visiting axs.com.
The 2023 WNBA regular season tips off on Friday, May 19 and features a record-high 40 games per team. All 12 teams will be in action during the opening weekend of the league’s 27th regular season as part of WNBA Tip-Off 2023 presented by CarMax. The regular season will conclude on Sunday, Sept. 10, followed by the WNBA Playoffs presented by Google.

About the WNBA
Tipping off its 27th season on May 19, 2023, the WNBA is a bold, progressive basketball league that stands for the power of women. Featuring 12 teams, the W is a unique sports property that combines competition and entertainment with a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and social responsibility. Through its world-class athletes, the in-game fan experience, TV and digital broadcasts, digital and social content and community outreach programs, the league celebrates and elevates the game of basketball and the culture around it.
In 2020, the WNBA and the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) signed a groundbreaking eight-year CBA that charts a new course for women’s basketball – and women’s sports overall – with a focus on increased player compensation, improvements to the player experience, expanded career development opportunities and resources specifically tailored to the female professional athlete. Key elements of the agreement are supported through the league’s partnership platform, WNBA Changemakers, with AT&T, the WNBA’s Marquee Partner and inaugural Changemaker, as well as fellow inaugural Changemakers Deloitte and NIKE, Inc, and subsequent additions Google and U.S. Bank. During the 2020 season, the WNBA and WNBPA launched the WNBA Justice Movement forming the Social Justice Council with the mission of being a driving force of necessary change and continuing conversations about race and voting rights, among other important societal issues.

I’m off to the World Cup, so I won’t be joining all y’all in Las Vegas, but I have faith in the Aces organization’s ability to do all the groundwork that the W itself might not be so good at, and to politely tell the league to get out of the way as necessary.

This seems like a lazy choice , the same way they had it in Connecticut for like 3 years in a row . Vegas gets its 3rd bid in what 4 or 5 years ?

From what I recall the team has to let the league office know they’d like to host. Does anyone know if any teams other than LV showed any official interest?

Season Ticket Members, be sure to check your email as there is an All-Star presale window for you next week. That info should be coming directly from your team reps at some point.

This will be LV's third ASG in five years: 2019, 2021, and 2023.
I guess the LV likes the odd-number seasons.
What really surprises me is that Los Angeles has never hosted.

I guess the league office didn’t have the gnads to penalize the Aces by taking away the All Star game. I’m not sure what strong message that sends.

First, that assumes other teams wanted it. There is a history at least of the game being something the league foisted on teams rather than chose from teams lining up for it.
Second, was likely too late to make those changes. Putting on a major event is not something you can just switch at the last minute. There are contracts in play well beyond the team that is sponsoring the event, and space needed that other cities may not have had remaining at the height of summer travel.

Indeed. I wouldn't be surprised if this cost Vegas an All-Star game in the future but, as far as 2023 was concerned, and with how late in the schedule the news broke, the most likely scenario was either Las Vegas was going to get to keep the All-Star game, or there wasn't going to be one. Like, I don't know who the fuck NF is, but the WNBA probably couldn't just go to the people who run the Target Center and be like, "Look, Vegas got caught slipping, so you're going to have to tell NF that they need to reschedule; we need you to host the All-Star game, now."

Reserves named today
https://www.espn.com/wnba/story/_/id/37945394/wnba-announces-12-reserves-2023-all-star-game
"The Connecticut Sun's Alyssa Thomas, Washington Mystics' Elena Delle Donne, New York Liberty's Courtney Vandersloot and Minnesota Lynx's Napheesa Collier are among the 12 2023 WNBA All-Star Game reserves, chosen by the league's head coaches and revealed Saturday on ABC's WNBA Countdown.
The group is rounded out by the Sun's DeWanna Bonner, Chicago Sky's Kahleah Copper, Liberty's Sabrina Ionescu, Las Vegas Aces' Kelsey Plum and a quartet of first timers: the Atlanta Dream 's Allisha Gray, Seattle Storm's Ezi Magbegor, Indiana Fever's Kelsey Mitchell and Dream's Cheyenne Parker."
"The 2023 All-Star Game's ten starters, voted on by fans, current players and media, were revealed last week: the Aces' A'ja Wilson, Liberty's Breanna Stewart, Phoenix Mercury's Brittney Griner, Los Angeles Sparks' Nneka Ogwumike, Dallas Wings' Satou Sabally, Fever's Aliyah Boston, Storm's Jewell Loyd, Aces' Chelsea Gray, Wings' Arike Ogunbowale and Aces' Jackie Young."

Class of 2013 gets two, making 28 for them all time. That moves them to solo third all time behind 1999 and 2001.
Class of 2014 gets a couple to reach 21. It's the 10th class to break 20.
Class of 2021 is still shut out and it's looking pretty bleak for their chances of ever getting one. Maybe McDonald or Onyenwere will sneak in someday.

Except for very high profile events, LA has never supported athletic events. There is just too much going on in the city to draw much interest from the locals. Its the same for SF Bay Area.

Isn't the point for all star games to draw fans from other states (teams) to one location not local fans?

Delle Donne is out for the game. I assume Loyd will be too.
Who makes the most sense to take their places? Rhyne Howard is the top scorer not in the game (by a pretty wide margin) so I assume she makes it.
Other contenders probably include NaLyssa Smith, Marina Mabrey, Natasha Howard. You'd like to see it be a Mystic so they could have a player in the game, but it is hard to pick one since the team is so balanced.
She shouldn't be, but I figure Taurasi for a dark horse.
