Bonner makes too much money to be as inconsistent as she is. The money would be better spent on a top-tier guard.
A.Thomas is the de facto PG but her offensive skills are limited to the point where JJ isn't able to be the #1 option as she should be (poor floor spacing)...AT has the biggest impact on Connecticut's offense, but that isn't a good thing when JJ is the most talented offensive player on the roster and former MVP.
I believe Hiedeman is a legit starting PG in this league which makes J.Thomas expendable.
Carrington has great upside. She just needs to play with a higher IQ.
B.Jones would be a nice starting center but I would not give her a max contract because she still has limitations. I don't think Jones is going to get a 200k multi year offer as some people might suspect. There are already a number of teams who have overpriced Centers or young centers who'll need to be paid in the future.
Moves/Trades offers I would make:
A.Thomas/Bonner for SDS/DD
Or
A.Thomas/J.Thomas for SDS/DD
JT or DB for Nelson-Ododa ......Salary dumb to create cap space. Also, with Toliver retiring, the Sparks could use another veteran on the team.
Or
JT or DB for future Seattle 1st rd pk.....Basically a salary dump to create cap space...But Seattle would get a legit starter.....Gabby will probably skip next season due to overseas commitments...Bonner only has 1 yr left on her contract so this would work out perfectly for Seattle.
Sign B.Jones 4yr/180k
Sign Hiedeman 4yr/140k
I don't see Williams coming back for another discount. However, if she does, I'd have to re-work my trades.
G- SDS
G- Hiedeman
C- B.Jones
F- J.Jones
F- DD
6- Carrington
7- Nelson-Ododa
8- Clouden
9- Rookie
That would still leave Conn with about $220,656 with 2-3 roster spots left...I would go after a couple of veterans...Players I would target:
A.Ndour
Whitcomb
Clark (Bring Diamond off the bench)
If B. Jones signs with another team I would go after:
Emma
Cambage (I don't think Curt would hold any grudge against Liz if it meant winning a championship.

I wouldn't do it, if I were Connecticut. I actually think that Miller's half-court offense would be compatible with Gamera, but I also think that they'd have to make too many roster changes to get her to fit.

Given Cambage’s history, I’m not sure that putting her on a team based out of a casino in an isolated part of Connecticut is the world’s greatest idea, even if she did suddenly decide that she wanted back into the WNBA.

I honestly think what Conn needs is a semi-overhaul. They need to move on from some of their vets (DB/JT) and free up cap space for their younger up-and-coming talent (BJ/NH)...They also need to break up the AT/JJ tandem.........That being said, Connecticut should only go after Cambage after all other options are exhausted.....Cambage would be a last resort.

Wherever Cambage plays there's going to be temptation (LV,NY,LA) or boredom (Indy,Tulsa)...There's always a risk when dealing with a player like cambage. Had LA utilized Liz properly I believe she would've finished the season and the Sparks would've made the playoff...Of course, Liz needs to bear some responsibility for not being in game shape/committed to the Sparks..........Again, signing Liz would be the last resort, and she'd have to show that she's in great shape (Physically and Mentally)

Yeah, but the problem is that the Sun’s location offers both boredom and temptation. If she couldn’t make that level of commitment for the team she claimed was her preferred destination, do you really think she’s going to make it to the Sun?

In talking to people that actually work in and around the league, one of the primary things you begin to realise is how much chemistry, team atmosphere, attitude and stuff like that in general actually matter and are taken into account by GMs/coaches. At this point, I think Cambage is going to struggle to find another job in this league, even with her obvious talent - except by a coach/GM who knows they're getting fired that year without obvious improvement, and doesn't have the talent to get wins. Fisher gambled on her because he figured "why the fuck not?" It's going to take someone else in a similar position. |

At the moment? No......Cambage would first need to get in basketball shape to show that she's committed, and she's clearly not in game shape.

Well, add in the fact that Fisher never took into account a player's impact on team chemistry before bringing them into the Sparks...so adding Cambage was kind of a "Fisher no-brainer."

Hopefully Brandi Poole is just promoted and doesn't follow him to LA. She seems more than ready for a HC job.

But didn't Chris fill his shoes whenever Curt was unavailable? Wouldn't he be next in line?

Per her podcast, Cheryl Reeve is still unsigned and talks with the new Lynx ownership haven’t progressed….so she is available if CT is willing to pay and poach $$
Could be a wild offseason

Do the Sun need to make a change at the head coach position? Curt Miller in 7 seasons seems not to be able to get the Sun a WNBA Championship. |
Thibault got 10 seasons and was fired after winning just two playoff series over his last seven years. That's not exactly where Miller is right now. |
Different era and playoff format. By the way, you give proof Curt Miller will likely have to move on from the Sun to win a WNBA Championship like Mike Thibault. |
Bumping up this thought I had 2 months ago about Curt Miller time being up by with the Connecticut Sun.

Good for her. I feel like a lot of people assumed she would end up back in Indy but I imagine she didn't have much interest in that job. Her college coaching tenure wasn't great but I admittedly don't watch much college ball. Let's see if she can do something with this squad.

I expected to come here with more talk of "the trade." My first thought was that now CT could keep BJones. As I already stated on the NY Lib thread, one of the quad players for CT Sun was going to have to go. Though JJ is the one who requested the trade, I'm thinking new leadership thought BJones was a better fit with "the engine" and "the stick." BJones sticks around the paint and knows how to get out of the engine's way. She just does her work of rebounding, putbacks plus knowing the engine is in charge of the show.

If they core B. Jones the front court is still very solid
I do wonder with Harris, Allen and #6 as options if we will see both Heideman and C. Williams re-signed
maybe there is a big make over at hand and we see Heideman a RFA in a sign and trade or J. Thomas traded or both?

If you're a GM and you have a MVP talent like Jonquel that can pretty much do everything on the floor, your #1 job should be keeping that player happy. Big failure for CT to allow their relationship with her get to this point and to get so little in return for her.
Their cap issues really aren't solved with this move....a lot of holes and not a lot of money to fill them. I think Jas Thomas has to be next up. I would be shopping her hard for cap relief to LA and Minnesota.

Sometimes the negatives are impossible to change, though. People who run the Sun can't change that they're in Connecticut, or that they're pretty isolated in the middle of nowhere. If Player X doesn't like those things there's not a whole hell of a lot you can do about it.
Also, there are plenty of sports teams over the years who've bent over backwards to try to keep their star happy, then thoroughly regretted it when the star leaves anyway and they're left with the detritus of all those moves. |
