Will Duke box and 1 Fudd? I don't think anyone's tried that yet.

Not with Lopez-Senechal.

Current score UConn 18 - Duke 13.

Surprisingly, Duke is hitting three's. Not surprisingly, Duke is containing the interior. Without Juhasz, that is Duke's primary advantage. That and the sheer number of athletic wing players Duke can throw out there. If any of them were dead eye shooters, Duke would be in this game.

End of Q1: UConn 23 - Duke 14.

I predict a UConn victory, with Duke's depth keeping it below 30. Duke needs to be creating more turnovers and I think that will happen later in the game as UConn plays 6 players to Duke's 10.

Freshman jumping jack Patterson has to realize she's not playing against 5-10 high school players anymore, and needs to develop some shots other than a putback and 4' turnaround jumper.

And UConn starts the second half on a 7-0 run to lengthen the lead to 19. Timeout. Duke needs to settle down. Geno made a key adjustment, bringing Aliyah Edwards to the high post and she's sunk a couple shots in a row from there.

OK CoachKara - can you make the counter adjustment?

Edwards now with 3 fouls - here's where Duke's post depth can keep the game relatively close.

66-45 with 6+ to go in Q4. Aliyah Edwards playing well, not picking up a 4th foul, grabbing up loose balls and scoring.

Senechal Griffin and Muhl have exceeded expectations so far this season. Especially Griffin, coming off back surgery. There was also legit concern that Senechal wouldn't be able to make the jump from the MAAC to elite D1. She's jumped right in and is not only with her scoring but with her 24yo maturity.

UConn leading by 31 but doesn't really look sharp.

Hey Glen, 14-16 at the ft line.

Geno calling off the dogs with over 4 to go and Kara leaving her starters in and pressing till the final buzzer....is a choice.

78-50 final.

The final margin more due to Duke's cold 2nd half shooting. (8-29, 1-10)

Edwards with another solid game 17pts on 6-8 shooting and 11rbs.
Senechal ends up with 23 pts partly due to getting good looks as everyone on Duke was helping on Fudd.

Enigma Amari Deberry comes in for the mop up and in 3 min is 0-2 with 2 fouls and 2 turnovers.

DeBerry was 0-2 on free throws. No shot attempts.

She will never develop just getting a few garbage time minutes at the end of blowouts, which this was. Geno is obviously investing in Patterson, who shows more aggression and less befuddlement than DeBerry, but who has shown no sign yet of a shooting touch.

Next year, I suspect Geno will invest heavily in Brady and the 6-4 Egyptian along with Edwards and Patterson in the front court, and if so, DeBerry will remain at the end of the bench. If she wants a lot of playing time, or even dreams of starting time, she'll have to consider the transfer portal.

And Duke's post depth could not keep up with Aliyah Edwards as Geno was able to get her some rest early in Q4 by playing frosh Patterson. Edwards finished the game very strong and was the reason the margin was 26 instead of being closer to 20. Duke cut it to 15 with Patterson on the floor, then Edwards and UConn steamrolled their way to the 26 pt margin of victory.

Something for Duke fans to think about: in the 98/99 season, Duke got pasted by UConn to start the season and finished the season getting to the FF by beating threepeating Tennessee and to the National Championship game by beating Georgia (with Miller twins and Tweety Nolan) at the FF. That propelled Duke into becoming a perennial FF contender for the next 8 yrs.

ROFLMFAO that this would be the observation after this game. The trio of Fudd, Senechal and Edwards was way too much for Duke to keep up with. Plus, Geno, the master, made some critical adjustments in the second half that shut down Balogun. CoachKara, still learning, did not have the counter moves after Geno's adjustments. Also utmost in CoachKara's mind was the complete meltdown to close last season. She has to keep this team competing through all the rough and tumble and this game was her first big chance to teach that lesson. Yes, even when you're getting beat...by a lot...keep playing your game all out until the buzzer sounds. So, yeah, it was a choice by CoachKara - and a good choice for this team.

Another choice by CoachKara was to go after athletic players committed to defense rather than shooters to form the basis for building this team from the scratch that was left. There are a couple of shooters on the squad but they aren't quite ready defensively to put on the floor much. And there's some shooters coming in next year. Make no mistake: UConn won this game by this margin because they've got shooters on the floor and Duke doesn't. And they have a master coach who knows how to make the right adjustments vs a coach still learning how to make counter moves on the fly.

Duke is in good hands. I know Lawson hasn't had the opportunity to prove herself as a coach yet, but she has a variety of experience in different areas and she's an incredible basketball mind. Ironically, she would have been on my short list to replace Geno when the time comes.

Hey, we're thrilled to be back in Cameron Indoor Stadium cheering on our team again. And, until attendance picks up again, I can sit right behind the bench and hear CoachKara reacting in real time. Kara has certainly taken a measured approach to building the team and is learning how to prepare herself and the team for making needed adjustments in real time. The last coach was notorious for not allowing Asst Coaches to make suggestions, but Kara seems to seek out ideas from AC's. And, at least Kara is willing to play the great teams and take big losses so the team learns what it's like to play great team ball. Today they learned they can't get a lot of steals/deflections against a well disciplined team. On to Plan B. And Duke will have the opportunity to apply what they learn as they will play against five top 15 teams in the ACC: Notre Dame, Louisville, NC State, Virginia Tech and UNC.

I was going to post here and mention how impressed I am with Nika Muhl and Azzi Fudd so far. However, after listening to the ESPN announcers all game long, if I hear one more word about how great they are, I'm going to start breaking things.

Laughing

Let Nika get her flowers. She’s been fantastic, and half her own fan base has been shitting on her for two years.
