I would like to see a team take another chance on Arella Guirantes. I think she could provide decent scoring off the bench.

The tournament has been hugely frustrating for the Malians, who are one of two sides at the 12-team finals to have yet to win a game, following previous losses against Japan, hosts Australia and France.

Whoa.

I expected a heated exchange, not an actual fist fight.

Shocked

Shakira Austin showing she deserves to be on this team. Our post trio of A'ja, Brionna and Shakira are all doing work.

Seeing this US team barely getting a challenge makes me wonder about all the players left off the team while some players played in so many Olympics & World Cup/World Championship teams. Love seeing some fresh blood out there!!!!

Of course I won't mind if Chelsea Gray keeps playing in every Olympics until kingdom come...

Opals delivered on the defense-oriented identity they've been preaching this year. Crucial win over Serbia.
It may have come at a heavy price though - Whitcomb with a possible broken nose (she was able to return to the court to play a crucial role down the stretch), and Allen with suspected broken rib(s) - needing a wheelchair to exit the arena after probably being game MVP for her work at both ends.
Tolo replaced Magbegor in the starting 5 and played a big part in the win, and Talbot was the other standout.

Canada looking good to finish top of the group after comfortably taking care of business vs Japan. I was really hoping for a 4OT marathon to wear out Canada before we play them tomorrow.

Do you have a video of what happened to Sami and Allen? I cant watch games back. And how is LJ playing? Can she still play at this level and contribute? I saw 9 pts in 10 min

Here are videos of Sami and Rebecca's injuries....yikes!!

Btw, Emma got hurt and is out for the rest of the tourney Confused

Yikes that doesnt look good for Allen Shocked Sad for Emma and team Belgium as this ruins any chance of getting a medal

Results have fallen perfectly for the Opals. Our destiny is in our own hands now.

Beat Japan and we finish top of the group, and get a winnable quarter final.
Lose and we face China or USA.

.... well look at that. We're #1. Surprised

Noon USA-Serbia
2.30pm Canada-Puerto Rico
6pm China-France
8.30pm Australia-Belgium

Those are Sydney local times, so subtract 14 hours for US ET - i.e. the USA-Serbia quarter-final is Wednesday night at 10pm ET.

Here is the schedule for the Quarterfinals

Wednesday, Sept. 28:

USA vs. Serbia, 10 p.m. ET, ESPNU

Thursday, Sept. 29:

Puerto Rico vs. Canada, 12:20 a.m. ET
China vs. France, 3:50 a.m. ET
Belgium vs. Australia, 6:20 a.m. ET

They didn't make it clear where the Thursday games would be shown, so I suppose it is ESPN+.

Afterwards, the semifinals are Friday and the final is Saturday at 2AM ET, ESPN2.

+1

I've been impressed with Reeve. She's certainly utilized her bench more than Staley ever did and the team has responded well. Staley was wound tight in their entire Olympic run and that trickled down to the team. They played not to lose instead of playing to win, fortunately they still won the gold.

I wonder if Griner was still available, would Reeve start her alongside Stewart and Wilson? It's clear the latter two work best with a "true" wing whether it's AT, Copper, or Atkins.

Does anyone know how Despina Barton got on FIBA's radar? It is baffling fascinating how little she seems to know about absolutely any of the players from any country.

No clue. She's a bizarre choice - bringing in an American but one who I've never heard do play-by-play in the US and who knows next to nothing about the players. I've preferred Thorburn, even if she has her occasional issues as well.

I'd guess she's inexpensive.

She did the AmeriCup for them last year and has done college games for ESPN3. She seemed equally clueless about the AmeriCup players.

ok I'm thinking....U.S.A. wins their quarterfinals....then probably Canada over Puerto Rico....Then China over France and Australia over Belgium, prob cuz Meeseman is injured -- but could be surprised I think in all these but the U.S. game.

Not at all related to this particular post, but it reminded me of this
nagging idea I've had all along....

HOW DOES PUERTO RICO QUALIFY AS A COUNTRY??
They're an American territory (often considered our 51st state),
but....they get to go to FIBA championship as their own entity?

They compete in the Olympics as their own national team as well.

I know....it's always been that way since I remember, but now as I think of it, it's almost as odd as it might be to read, "USA and California both make it into the quarterfinals" Razz

No shortage of talent in the USA's current starting lineup of Loyd, Gray, Stewart, Thomas, and Wilson, but I preferred the perimeter defense and athleticism that came with having Copper and Atkins in the starting lineup.

Austin and Bri Jones are the only pure 5's on this roster. Why are they playing alongside each other?

Serbia is hanging with the US.

Also, why is the attendance so bad for this? I thought Australia liked women's basketball?

It tipped off at noon on a work day is probably the main reason. But I agree that even given that the crowd is pretty sparse.

Sooooo AT is doing some of everything out there (as per usual). While I have to admit that she annoyed me during the playoffs, (I think she is the epitome of you love her if she's on your team but if she's not.... Evil or Very Mad Sad Confused Laughing ) it has been awesome to see how well she is playing for Team USA. . I had been lobbying for Bri Jones to get the opportunity but who knew how well AT would fit in here?!!

Anyone think she could possibly walk away with a tourney MVP?

Btw, I haven't seen Kah back on the bench and truly hope she's ok.

Now Laney...sheesh....Dr. Watson is working hard today!

The score definitely doesn't indicate how scrappy Serbia has been in this matchup. I hope Yvonne Anderson gets another look from a W squad.

I wish!

Basketball has always been a 2nd-class sport here, with the women's version being 3rd-class.
I was worried that even the Opals (group stage) games were going to be barren.

Lots of semi-US-friendly times up until now, but the business end of the tournament is going to test your dedication levels

17:00 Canada v United States (US Time: Fri 03:00am ET) Boxscore Link
19:30 Australia v China (US Time: Fri 05:30am ET) Boxscore Link
