People have been talking about the Sam Thomas thing all over WNBAtwitter for days now, with no update or change or apology, which suggests it wasn't a mistake. Or they don't want to admit the mistake. It's incredibly hard to see how any kind of vote ends with her in the top five. There's at least a dozen ahead of her for that spot.
For awards picks, my article with all of mine came out yesterday if anyone's interested: https://herhoopstats.substack.com/p/wnba-dissected-2022-end-of-season-awards |

The only thing I can think of is that they didn't solicit votes for an all-rookie team. They just took votes from rookie of the year, and there happened to be 5 so boom. That would mean some hometown writer decided to throw a vote to Thomas.
While bizarre, that would at least make some sense.

Well deserved. His creativity with the GM position has been next level.

An apparent return to normalcy.

Congrats to Rhyne! A very well deserved honor for her. Good group of rookies on the team as well.
Will she be the only one from the Dream to get recognition?

Howard broke the tie between #1 and non-#1 picks winning Rookie of the Year. After this year, #1 picks are up 13-12. Also, because I'm bored at work, I figured out the average draft position of the ROTY. Right now, it's 3.16, if you take out Dangerfield's double digit draft position, it would have been 2.625. Good job on her for raising the average. Never give up, never surrender!

Talking about the tie between the #1 Pick and the field, what's interesting to me is that it looks like there have been more ROYs drafted with the sixth pick than with the second and third picks combined.

Only one #7 but a whopping FOUR #6 picks won the award. On the other hand, only one #2 and three #3 picks won it.

I stand corrected. I thought there were five: I must have miscounted.

Tis quite ok, still a surprising stat. Only a single solitary #2 pick (who could have easily been a #1 pick) has won the award, yet three #3 picks and four #6 picks. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Would have been a #1 pick in literally any other season, except 2008 (and maybe, maybe 2016).

It's actually sort of understandable. She lost Griner before the season, SDS at the end of the season, and other players during the season. I'm sure many people wrote the team off and they still made it to the playoffs. That's probably the reason. Wouldn't have been my voite or even in my top 4, but it's not COMPLETELY out of the realm of possibility I guess.

I still do not understand the hype around Wright. She blew and missed the playoffs. I was more impressed with VJ this year that Wright.

She started strong and many people set their award opinions early. OTOH she did improve her team's record, which is more than Hammon can claim.
As a Dream fan I was generally pleased with what Wright did but she was nowhere near COY.

I think people wrote off the Dream early in the year. Revamped roster, no Tip for a while, rookies, last year's extraness. The fact that she had them contending until the end and calmed the ship is what really sold it.

Often times, the sportsmanship award goes to a player who's been around in the league for a while, and if they're nearing the end of her career.

Coach of the Year is usually about exceeding expectations. The good teams this year were generally supposed to be good (and it's not like any of them went 32-4 and blew away the league or anything like that). Atlanta were supposed to really suck, and ended up only moderately sucking. And they did that after doing virtually nothing in free agency, while letting two of their better players walk away for zero return, and trading their most recent star youngster for an aging guard LA didn't want and a future pick.
Coming out of that with a positive season, even if it was positive while going 14-22 and missing the playoffs was a pretty meaningful achievement for a rookie head coach. Meanwhile Hammon arrived in San Antonio and made them more fun to watch, but by most statistical measures beside playoff seeding worse than previous years under Laimbeer. |

Coach of the Year has never gone to a coach of a team with a losing record, and usually goes to a coach who is well over it.
There may be some bias going on as well. Only two black coaches have won the award, both of them men. It has gone to a white coach 92% of the time.
