About damn time. There are so many great guards this season, this really did need to happen.

Very interesting to see them announce these dates ahead of time. I guess that means they won't be making award announcements on the player's/coach's home court during the play-offs. That's too bad, I think.

I have a couple of candidates for the sportsmanship award: Cunningham and Mabrey.

Hard to imagine that won't be either Bird or Fowles.

CBS Sports w/Jack Maloney has his picks.
https://www.cbssports.com/wnba/news/2022-wnba-awards-picks-aja-wilson-for-historic-mvp-defensive-player-of-the-year-combo-rhyne-howard-for-roy/
MVP: A'ja Wilson, Las Vegas Aces
Quote: |
Though she has been the MVP before in 2020, this was the best she has ever looked. |
Quote: |
She also became the first player in WNBA history to put up 700 points, 300 rebounds and 70 blocks in a season. |
Quote: |
Wilson led the Aces to three wins over the top-four opponents in the final week of the season to earn first place. |
Rookie of the Year: Rhyne Howard, Atlanta Dream
Quote: |
Few rookies in league history have made as much of an immediate impact on both ends of the floor as Howard. |
Defensive Player of the Year: A'ja Wilson, Las Vegas Aces
Quote: |
Ultimately, Wilson's ability to protect the rim at an elite level for 30 minutes a night – arguably the most important defensive attribute – gives her the slight nod. |
Most Improved Player: Jackie Young, Las Vegas Aces
Quote: |
Young registered career highs in everything but assists, averaging 15.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.4 steals. |
Sixth Player Of the Year: Brionna Jones, Connecticut Sun
Quote: |
A free agent at the end of this season, Jones should be in line for a big payday. |
Just like last time?
Coach of the Year: Tanisha Wright, Atlanta Dream
Quote: |
The Dream were a disaster on and off the court last season, and hiring Wright was one of their first moves as they plotted a complete rebuild. |
He’s also got his choices for the various All WNBA teams. You can check them out for yourself.

The Storm nominated Briann January.

What in the actual F?
She made four whole baskets all season.

More fouls than points.

That has to be a mistake. I mean how could that be accurate? Surely there will be a correction.

I do feel a little bad that Sam Thomas is out here catching strays on social media, just because the AP has its heads up its collective asses.

Wow! Even I knew that wasn't right! Sam Thomas? Come on! She is popular in AZ n and for some reason seems to garner a lot of praise, but her stats don't back it up at all!!
I also agree that Egbo as well as perhaps others would have been more deserving.

Can someone explain the Tanisha Wright goodwill for me? She did a very good job with Atlanta but how on earth do you select someone who missed the playoffs as coach of the year? Can a coaching afficianado explain this to me?

I feel bad for her too. It truly will be interesting to see who actually gets the W awards. I suspect (and hope) this is not a preview of W tomfoolery!

Maybe Feinberg got it wrong -- misread it? You know, like the Academy Awards that one year? Is there an official release of the AP All-WNBA Rookie Team? No disrespect to Sam Thomas, but she barely played....

Given what this award often is, she's a perfect choice.
I am also really pleased to see January as the runner-up (even if a distant one). The retirements of Fowles and Bird have sucked all of the air out of the room, but I will miss having January in the league.
