NWSL Expansion draft happened yesterday. They were given a two hour broadcast window for something that likely could have happened in ten minutes. Fir teams made trades beforehand to avoid losing anyone in the draft. Kind of uneventful.

It's bizarre to me that people are falling all over themselves to get in on NWSL expansion while the WNBA can't find interested parties

Kansas City Current was sold to their owner for $5 million. No word on the price of an NWSL expansion team. There's never been a $$$ amount announced for when any WNBA team was sold for(new ownership or relocation). Thinking a NWSL team is cheaper to run as well. Salaries are much lower, shared stadiums with MLS or USL counterparts, etc.

They've got twice as many players on a roster. It's not much cheaper.

The team being sold is more of the same thing. People are willing to invent in money losing women's sports if the players are mostly white and mostly straight.

A WNBA will likely be twice as much as an NWSL club. WNBA teams by and large play in NBA arenas where the rent is much more than an NWSL team pays for rent at their stadiums---few NWSL teams play in MLS stadiums. The WNBA has not been very active in pushing for expansion. The NWSL has. When a league isn't making noises about wanting new clubs or is actually saying they don't want any at the moment, it kind of chills the desire to buy a WNBA expansion club.

I also fully expect the NWSL to reach 16 before the WNBA does. None of the previous league presidents for the W actively tried to get the league to expand.

*Yes, the WNBA was at 16 teams from 2000-2022.

Val Ackerman was all about the expansion. Of the 18 franchises that have existed, 17 were added under Val.

She had the fortunate of getting the league started and having 8 expansion teams start under her. Since 2002, there's been only two expansion teams that have joined(Chicago & Atlanta).

I agree with you. The NWSL is more active in growth while the WNBA is trying more to solidify the present teams. I do think NWSL will get to 16 before the WNBA gets back to 16.
