It ism sorta. Kind of like in the NFL with the Browns-Ravens. The Ravens were BASICALLY an expansion team, but could only have Browns' players. Same here in that the players are moving to Utah, but unlike with the Browns, there is no agreement to replace and pick back up FCKC at a future date.

And multiple sources are saying FCKC are done. League stays at 10 teams for 2018.

Let's hope we don't get the team named Real Salt Lake Women or anything else cheesy.

Reports are also coming about that the Barcelona group & the potential Atlanta group might be granted expansion teams just before the start of the 2018 season to join in 2019. Barcelona is looking at playing in the Bay Area now instead of San Diego.
Mia Hamm was recently asked about a NWSL in Los Angeles(Hamm is co-owner of LAFC) and she replied with "they're working it. We'll have an update soon".
So possibly the league could have Barcelona(Bay Area) & Atlanta join in 2019 with Los Angeles and possibly Minnesota join in 2020.
EAST: Boston, NJ SkyBlue, Washington, Atlanta, Orlando, North Carolina, Chicago
WEST: Seattle, Portland, Bay Area, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Houston, Minnesota

First I've heard of a team for Minnesota. Nice though. Not having a team in San Diego is just stupid with the history of soccer in general (Sockers) and women's soccer with the SeaLions among others.
More teams the better!!!

Interesting news today as FCKC has opened up season ticket sales for the 2018 season. maybe Sporting KC is coming through after all?

League sent out a post that FCKC has ceased operations and all player contracts have been moved to the Utah team. FCKC is dead. Hopefully Sporting wants to make an expansion team and they can market the women's team well and actually get folks to show up. The folks that ran FCKC into the ground, much like the marketing/advertising folks at Chicago, Boston and Sky Blue, suffer from Rectal-Cranial Inversion.

Atlanta's potential ownership group essentially released a statement yesterday saying they're ready to start a NWSL team on one major condition; they're also granted an NASL team.

If the Minnesota and Nashville follow through with their promises on bringing in a NWSL team, that's 13 teams. Add in either Atlanta or San Jose and the league is at 14 teams, hopefully by 2022.

According to several SoCal news sources, LA should be granted an expansion team by midseason. Vancouver is likely being put on standby incase Seattle doesn't find a new home for 2019.

UPDATE: LAFC & Barcelona bid for Los Angeles NWSL expansion team is now expected to be announced around the championship match on Sept. 22 in Portland. Vancouver Whitecaps bid uncertain, still likely to due Seattle's unknown options for 2019.

League seems to be headed towards losing Skyblue and possibly granting NYCFC an expansion team for 2020 along with LAFC. League will drop to 8 teams for 2019, then up to 10 for 2020.

It's being reported that Barcelona is fast tracking themselves to get into the league for 2019. Their target is Los Angeles, but I hope with LAFC all but guaranteed for 2020 if the NWSL might push Barcelona towards San Diego or the Bay Area.
Add in Barcelona for 2019, LAFC & Cincinnati for 2020 plus Minnesota & Atlanta for 2021. SkyBlue gets bought by the Red Bulls & the Seattle Reign get bought by the Sounders.

I would hope Seattle and Sky Blue stay in the league. Remains to be seen if the Reign ownership wants to let got of the team all together or just sell off controlling interest to the Sounders. Could Vancouver swoop in and buy them and relocate north?? Hmmmmm.....
San Diego makes ALL kinds of sense. That city has a LONG history of women's football, going back to the beginning of the W-League in the mid-90s. Bay Area would also be good as well.
A 14-team league for 2021 sounds good to me---would need to extend the season by a couple games to at least 26 to play every opponent twice. Could see the league split into East and West conferences at that point though, which would be kind of bad, but kind of good at the same time.
We shall see!!!

Vancouver has stated recently they're withdrawing from getting a NWSL team as the Whitecaps wanted a mostly Canadian roster and the NWSL refused.

Amanda Duffy talked about expansion during the draft today, saying 2020 is their target for the next "round" of expansion. Duffy said they've been in talks with Barcelona about a team for over a year now. Seems like LAFC and Barcelona will have two separate teams. I'm still hoping the Red Bulls or NYCFC but Skyblue shortly.
