Congratulations.

Outstanding coaching career. Never was a full time assistant coach. Not many coaches can develop long-term elite athletic programs at top 10 academic institutions.
At 63, Tara will likely break Pat Summitt's record of 1098 wins. Can she stay ahead of Geno, who is nine months younger and 24 wins behind? |

Over the last five years, Geno gained six wins per season on her. This year looks like it will come in under that, so expect him to surpass her sometime in the 2020-2021 season, assuming nothing else major changes between now and then. That's probably right around the time they'll be approaching Summitt's record.
OTOH, Summitt would be only about a year older than Vanderveer. A lot can happen to keep the record from being broken.

Tara took the 1995-96 year off from Stanford to coach the Olympic team. Stanford was 29-3 that season. So, had Tara not taken that leave of absence, she would currently be about 53 games ahead of Geno, making his pursuit much more difficult. |

Truly classy and a fantastically funny sense of humor. Thanks Tara for all you've done for Stanford and for basketball.

Something else to consider; all of Geno's wins have come in NCAA play. Summitt and Vanderveer are credited with wins from the AIAW, 59 for Tara and 175 for Pat. The NCAA doesn't count player stats or records from those games, so an argument could be made that they shouldn't count coaching results either.

Since 2009 when Pat got win 1,000. Tennessee fans have sat all alone. With a program with a coach with 1,000 wins. It's good to finally have some company.

Just curious, will it be 3 is a crowd when Geno joins that group?

Who else might be even close, Coach K at Duke?

Tara certainly is a legend in her own right, consistently classy and professional.
Myrtle, in your 'adventures' as a Stanford alumna, did you ever meet Tara or spend any significant time getting acquainted with her?

I knew that--I didn't word it too well. I was just trying to think of coaches who've attained that level at a school of elite academic standing (which limits recruiting).

Tara in person is pretty much the same as what you see. What you see is what you get. She actually is quite a private person. Has a great sense of unique humor. She believes in treating all her 'girls' as family and reaches out to us oldies. A good human being and class act. Not perfect of course...just like the rest of us.

One of my all-time favorite coaches. I wish she had stayed at OSU or gone back to IU. Somewhere closer than the west coast!
And I thought that Stanford's victories when she was with Team USA were counted in her wins since she was still the head coach?

As a Cal alum and superfan I generally have only ill will for anything red and tree-like. But I have spoken with Tara and several of her players and think she is one of the classiest individuals I have ever met. She has run an exemplary program that can be proud of their record of success and even more proud of the many great athletes and people that have come through her program.

Gotta love Tara. The game will greatly miss her when she decides to step away, so it's nice to know she'll be in charge for at least a few more seasons. Happy news.

How many more years beyond her contract do you think she will coach?
