Great example of cherry picking a couple facts to try to make a dubious point.
Probably more relevant is that all four 1s and three 2s are alive on the women's side while the men have lost a 1 and three 2s, and that at the sweet sixteen, the men have a region made up of the 3,4,7,8 teams. The women have nothing close to that. Of course those facts would have manifested the absurdity of her thesis.

So, the women's tournament is doing a better job of identifying the best teams. It always seems to be that should be the ultimate goal of the tournament.

One of the 2s the men lost made it to the S16, a round that hasn't started for the women.

Maybe, but the premise of the article is that the women's tourney has had more upsets and close games and thus is more entertaining than the men. That premise is untrue. You can say chalk is a result of "better job of identifying the best teams" but more likely it's simply more stratified and predictable.

Doesn't change anything. Point out the sweet sixteen region that is close to having the 3,4,7 and 8 teams.

Is the women's tournament having more good games in the first 2 rounds than ever before?
Seems like an indication that the talent pool is beginning to expand.

That's one possible explanation. Another is that in the women's game the 1 and 2 seeds are further away from the lower seeds in terms of ability, making upsets much harder. Or, the seeds in the women's tournament are more accurate because there is greater disparity between the top teams and the lower seeds than in the men's game.

The men's tournament was so badly mis-seeded that vegas had a #12 seed favored over a #5 in round one. And yes, the #12 seed won and covered the spread.

Why did anyone expect a writer for a political blog to say anything worthwhile about a women's basketball tournament? Look at the other stuff she's written...she cherry picks a bunch of tweets and makes a story around them. Consider the source and move on.

True. Every year a few writers suddenly discover women's basketball and write half-assed articles about it. Thank goodness for Voepel, Feinberg, etc.

She's a sports reporter. Has written about sports in various places for multiple years.

But on the NCAA website, with the exception of a link to box scores, this news can’t be found until you scroll down a bit on the homepage page. Which is far better than it was on Monday, when the only mention of the women’s tournament was next to a story about fencing at the very bottom of the front page (no offense to fencing enthusiasts here). |
