Forty five seconds to go with Purdue up 64-59.

IU has the ball and the player drives to the basket. Baseline official calls a block and one of the out officials calls a charge (the correct call IMO).

They huddle up and finally chicken-shit their way out of it and call a double foul!

Both players foul out and IU gets the ball.

I don't think that I have ever seen a double foul on a block/charge call. I have no idea how many games I've watched, safe to say in the thousands. Unbelievable!

That is absurd. If a defender is committing a blocking foul, then she wouldn't be in a legal defensive position to draw a charge. "Chicken-shit" is a good way to describe such a double foul.

I've seen it twice. I thought it was a Pac-12 ref thing. Rolling Eyes

How many high school games have you been to lately?

High school coaches would kill to have the worst college refs do their games ...

The Indiana men's team had double fouls called in two games - three days apart!

This isn't about HS basketball. This is about NCAA. We expect better. By this level they should have at least read the rule book. Could you stick to the subject?

Sorry I wasn't more clear ...

The pool of available officials for all levels begins with youth and CYO, moves up through high school and into college.

The available college refs have come through high school and presumably are the cream of that crop. So any improvement in officiating would require better officials, who presumably are learning their trade at the lower levels.

I see very little evidence on the women's side -- especially with the rapid and forced promotion of any female official with a pulse and a rudimentary knowledge of the rule book -- that there is untapped high school talent out there waiting to be called to the CAA or even D2 and D3.

Presumably training could improve officiating, but if you go to the WNBA site (I know, off topic) you will find complaints about the officials there even though their training is much more extensive and the supervision much more intense.

Complaints about the officials are much like complaints about the weather ... mildly entertaining but essentially pointless unless some heretofore unknown mechanism can deliver more control over the process.
