Clay had to submit 25 names? That's the system?

What bloat! What Cecil B. DeMille excess! What . . . uh . . . fake news!

No more than seven players have a realistic chance of winning the Wooden.

That's six more than last year.

I believe coach Walz would refer to naming 25 names as participation trophies.

So what part of her game most impresses you this year? That she's third on the team in scoring at 11 ppg, that she's leading the team in turnovers, or that she's shooting 39%? Have you watched Louisville play this season? She's generally not playing like one of the top 25 players.

That's the issue with several players on the list; they're not playing up to ther past reputations. They all deserved to be on the initial list, but some don't deserve to be on the January list.

She's been good in the past, but the few games I saw she's been terrible and not only that, but pouting around and rolling her eyes. Walz needs to crack the whip and bench her...

Damn son, in deference to recent history and William of Ockham, I shall reduce the current probability to one player.

The full top 25 as follows: (as per ESPN....the positions listed are not all accurate. See: Brionna Jones, Kelsey Mitchell, etc.)

G Lindsay Allen, Notre Dame;
C/F Kristine Anigwe, California;
C/F Jordin Canada, UCLA;
G Alaina Coates, South Carolina;
C Nia Coffey, Northwestern;
F Napheesa Collier, Connecticut;
F Nina Davis, Baylor;
F Asia Durr, Louisville;
G Makayla Epps, Kentucky;
G Rebecca Greenwell, Duke;
G Jessica January, DePaul;
G Alexis Jones, Baylor;
G Brionna Jones, Maryland;
C Erica McCall, Stanford;
F Kelsey Mitchell, Ohio State;
G Kia Nurse, Connecticut;
G Alexis Peterson, Syracuse (I KNEW this kid belonged!)
G Kelsey Plum, Washington;
G Leticia Romero, Florida State;
G Katie Lou Samuelson, Connecticut;
G/F Brianna Turner, Notre Dame;
F Victoria Vivians, Mississippi State;
G Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, Maryland;
G Sydney Wiese, Oregon State;
G A'ja Wilson, South Carolina

BIG-TIME talent. The only (near-) pretender in this group might be Nina Davis. But she's a good kid, so, what the heck....

While I get that the award is supposed to go to the "Best" Player in the nation, I really wish they would take an opportunity to give a nod to a mid major or two who are having fantastic season. Take for instance, the insanity that is Allison Arens of South Dakota or Emily Clemens of Western Illinois. Those players have absolutely put together fantastic seasons so far. I guess that while I get that the big guys have the best player, I wish the little guys would get some recognition.

That's a pretty good list, honestly. Stuff like this is pretty difficult to put together.

Does Notre Dame need a center? They can have Jordin Canada.

No Tennessee players on the list. Are they sending a message?

Clay picks that didn't make the cut. Not too bad, I guess.

Monique Billings, UCLA
Sophie Cunningham, MO
Katelynn Flaherty, Michigan
Myisha Hines-Allen, Louisville
Jessica Shepard, Nebraska
Shakayla Thomas, Florida State

They seem to favor clubs that do well, so maybe Shepard should have been the obvious out, and maybe Cunningham.

No Williams on Clay's or on the official list.
Should we blame him or give him credit for brillance?

The omission of Gabby Williams is wrong.

After telling everyone that UConn lost virtually all their talent last April it would be tough to explain how they had 4 players on the list.

I'm sure that the MOP of the FF would satisfy Williams much more. Wink

Unfortunately, she's not the only one slighted. It really is tough to include all the deserving kids.

Unless I missed it, Jankoska isn't mentioned anywhere in this thread, yet in another thread here, she's a first-team All American...?

With all due respect Clay...Flaherty over Tori? Wink

When Cardinal included Jankoska on his AA team, I was motivated to examine her stats. They are dominating. For example, she currently is:

-- 4th in the country in efficiency (19.2)
-- 6th in the country in PPG (22.8)
-- 5th in the country in 3FG made (57)
-- hits FT's at 89.4%
-- averages 5.1 assists per game
-- averages 7.6 rebounds per game

She may be the most overlooked player in the country. The reason may be that she's not often been looked at, at all, for example by TV exposure. I don't think I've ever seen her. But, based on her statistical dominance to date, she deserves high recognition.

Is there a limit on the number of players from the same team that can be nominated, like the WBCA All American Team?

Agree Gabby should be on list.

She actually does get a fair amount of exposure on BTN....I've seen her play several times. And she was also touted all last season as "Robin" to Ariel Powers' "Batman" for the Spartans, so followers of the game have had lots of opportunity to see her. But....she's buried in a middle-of-the pack team in the Big Ten, and the Big Ten isn't exactly the hottest of the P5 conferences right now, so....maybe we have to wait till NCAAs to get her the cred she deserves. I personally think she could have similar success to Powers, but who knows?

I've only seen Jankoska a couple of times and she didn't jump out at me -- but her numbers are really good. She should have been on the list ...

If it makes you feel any better, I put her on the Christmas break stat tracking list in the WNBA Mock Draft thread. Before that, nobody said a peep about her in that thread. Afterwards they started ranking her among the best guards. So basically she wasn't getting the hype until she put up 42 pts in a game recently. That tends get you noticed.

Playing second fiddle to Aerial Powers the last 3 years probably didn't help in regards to Jankoska's recognition. But she's been the most dominant point guard in the country this year, outside of Plum, of course.

She's still a SWG though, so I'm skeptical that her performance will yield a higher draft status. She might be the most improved player in the country, but I think of any player Sydney Wiese has probably done the most to inflate her stock this year.

I think Jankoska is pretty amazing. I started noticing her last year around tourney time. We get BTN so I've seen quite a bit of her this year. I made a point of watching her the other night when she broke the record.....WOW. She definitely is a special player.

Technically, I believe (and it seemed that way when I watched MSU last) that she's more of the SG who also facilitates very well. There's another starter named McCutcheon who has more assists than Jankoska.

She's not a secret. Way back in August 2015, before her junior season, in a thread about the "top 5 at each position" I wrote.

I agree. I think it's Jefferson, Allen, Theriot, and Johnson as the clear top 4. # 5 is wide open. Many contenders. Maybe Tori Jankoska or Gabbi Ortiz.

The last couple years she was more of a facilitator and point. Now she's mostly a shooting guard, in part because there's not much of anyone to pass to on this year's Spartan team.

Funny when you look back to pre-2015-16 season comments. Theriot didn't come back very well from her injury and fell off the charts, and Ortiz has sort of vanished, never really living up to her freshman promise

Don't remind me.... Crying or Very sad Some kids ascend in college, others....not so much.

Re: Tori....I think she's best as a 2, but certainly has 1 skills. At least in her current setting.

During Tori's time in East Lansing, Merchant has booted two pretty solid point guards, Morgan Green & Kiana Johnson off the team...consequently, Jankoska
wound up playing PG way more than originally intended...the end result should benefit her as a PRO...somewhere.
