Women's hoops tourneys in Puerto Rico moved because of Zika
Two women's college basketball tournaments in Puerto Rico have been moved because of concerns about the Zika outbreak.
The San Juan Shootout held during Thanksgiving weekend will be played in Daytona, Florida. The Puerto Rico Classic will move to Las Vegas on Dec. 19-21.
"This is not an easy decision for us in light of our decades of relationships with our Puerto Rican partners," Sport Tours president Lee Frederick, whose company runs the events, said in a statement. "However, we understand it is what the universities want at this time. The strength of our relationships in Daytona Beach and Las Vegas has allowed us to make the changes smoothly. We look forward to returning to San Juan in 2017 and beyond."
The San Juan Shootout participants are Penn State, Georgetown, American, Clemson, Georgia State, Loyola Chicago, Troy, VCU, Villanova and Wright State. The Las Vegas field includes Cal, Oklahoma, Xavier, Arkansas State, Kennesaw State, Northern Kentucky, Portland State and Southern Mississippi....

Yeah, there's a certain element of "did not think the cunning plan all the way through" with that, isn't there?

I don't believe there have been any mosquito borne cases snywhere even close to Daytona, which is nearly 300 miles from Miami.
I don't think "Florida" has s problem, I think South Florida has a problem.

I do believe Zika is still far more prevalent in PR than FL, but still....who even knows about any of the other Caribbean destinations (Cancun, etc.)??

Florida has a problem anywhere it has mosquitoes, which is just about everywhere.

That's entirely incorrect, it's very geographically limited, but whatever.

Been in Florida lately? If they don't have a problem they will. They have mosquitoes. There are a number of mosquito-borne diseases besides Zika, including West Nile, dengue, and Chikungunya, most of which have been reported in Florida in the last couple of years.

And we have all of those right here in Va and Maryland too. There's been West Nile in 46 states and DC.
And the Aedes aegypti mosquito - not the only but the most common carrier of Zika and several other of these diseases - is common in the DMV area, and ranges as far north as New Hampshire and Michigan.
Not sure where you think there aren't any mosquitos.

I prefer arguing with a stone fence, although wooden ones are also OK. Fences are easy to win arguments against.

Junkanoo Jam has been moved from Grand Bahama to Bimini, but not because of Zika....because of hurricane damage.
