According to Bret McCormick, Molly Goodenbour has been named HC at San Francisco. Most recently at Cal State East Bay since June, and Cal State Dominguez Hills and previously at UC Irvine.

Clay, what do you think of Molly Goodenbour as Azzi's replacement?

I am not Clay, but it kind of keeps it in the family, doesn't it?

A very interesting hire, as Goodenbour has the Stanford pedigree, D2 success and D1 struggling.

People will say, and I don't know because she's been in LA for the past 10 years, that she's sometimes hard to get along with.

To recap: First head coaching gig at Chico State, a D2 school where she had a good record. Moved to UC Irvine, a Big West team, and went 44-76 in four seasons and moved on 15-15 and 13-17 seasons.

Downsized to D2 Cal State Dominguez Hills and went 77-44 in four seasons with two league titles. She was 0-3 in the NCAAs.

Took the job at Cal State East Bay, another NorCal D2, in June, saying she wanted to get back to the Bay Area. Coincidentally, eight of her top ten players on a 22-10 team graduated.

So color me unconvinced. USF is a tough place to win, and you have to recruit, recruit and recruit, so we'll see how that goes.

More troubling to me is the timing of both Azzi's and Goodenbour's maneuvers. Azzi really put USF in a very difficult spot by leaving in September. It just doesn't seem right, even if you've had a sudden realization that this is not the job for you, to leave your employers at such a critical juncture in the women's basketball calendar. And now Goodenbour has placed Cal State East Bay in a very difficult situation, as the Division II school must scramble for a coach with the beginning of practice imminent.

But to get back to the original question, I think it will be hard for Goodenbour to duplicate Azzi's success at USF. Goodenbour has more experience than Azzi as she takes over the job, but she starting out behind, and though the WCC isn't the Pac-12, it's a pretty competitive league top to bottom.

Do we know why Azzi left? What's this other opportunity or is that just muddle-speak?

I wonder if her leaving has something to do with the fact that she is expecting her first child. She may want a job that allows her to be at home in order to take care of that child and to let them stay in one location.

Not that people should have to stay at home with children, it just makes it a heck of a lot easier.

It's unclear, really. I think what Azzi is saying publicly – that she's just ready to move on – is accurate, but what's missing is why she left in September instead of June, which puts not only USF but also Cal State East Bay in a very difficult position.

As I mentioned before, I can see Azzi as a WNBA coach, because she does a lot of motivational speaking that generates a lot of income for her, and the WNBA's shortened season would give her an opportunity to take advantage of that income stream while still coaching.

Hard to say though… Azzi was away from the game for a long time before, and maybe she's just done.

I think it's the right thing to do to step away if you're burned out, but her timing was not good.

Personally, I'd give her a lot of credit for CHOOSING to be a full-time mom over coaching. If it's financially feasible, why not? NO job is more intensely demanding nor important than parenting, imo. Now, leaving her school in the lurch might indicate poor planning or decision-making, but we can't know all the details involved.

I am amazed at the amount of hires that have trickled through the end of Sept/beginning of Oct. With practice already having started and the season right around the country, it's going to be crazy getting everyone up to speed. I don't recall it being this chaotic this late in the calendar year before.
