Both tournaments started over the weekend. Division A is in Matosinhos, Portugal while Division B is in Podgorica, Montenegro. As always, the final standings will determine which teams move up or down a level for next summer. Even though this tournament has no global impact, it is still the most prestigious youth championship in Europe and players are expected to participate.
Most of the Division A games will be streamed on FIBA's YouTube Channel.
I will not be covering the tournaments daily, but I have some links if you want to keep up with the players with American ties. I must have missed a few, especially some incoming college players, so if you have any more, I will add to them.

Interesting that ODU still has the Portugal pipeline running, though not as strongly as it once did.

The ends to both of these tournaments were ridiculous.
Cecilia Zandalasini nearly brought Italy back all the way, but the combination of Maria Conde and Helena Orts helped Spain win their fifth championship in six years 71-69. In fairness, if every country was at full strength, Spain would have just mopped the floor with the opposition.
The real drama was at the other end of the standings, where the bottom three teams get relegated to Division B in the next edition of these tournaments. Germany and Slovakia had extremely close losses on Saturday to have their fates sealed early. That left Turkey just getting past Greece 67-65 to stay in the division.
The Division B Final was anti-climatic with Slovenia beating Lithuania 62-45 after both teams had already gotten promoted to the summer's main tournament. The Bronze Medal game for the last spot was also quite thrilling with Hungary edging the Czech Republic 50-49.

Surprised that Lithuanian has no US college players on the national junior team.
At least used to be a strong basketball country. I was the men's coach and AD at an NAIA school in California during the '90s and we had three men's and fpur women's players from Lithuanian that powered the women's team and added to the men's. They all had friends in D1 at that time.
