Very odd move here: Rellah Boothe was kicked upstairs to the U18s after showing in tryouts that she was pretty much the only U17 who could score. Boothe's attitude has been questioned in the past, and she didn't make the U16 team last year -- she was one of the 18 trying out for 12 spots on the U17 team, but now she's out of that mix.
And 6-4 Kasiyahna Kushkituah was supposedly moved from the U17 tryouts into the U18 mix but didn't make it. Maybe she's back with the U17s?
In any event, neither team looks to be that strong. There are no superstars available, though Megan Walker (U18, Monacan HS VA) is awfully good.

When is the age cutoff date? Are most of the class of 16 too old, or did many choose to start classes and work with their college and skip it?

They got the easy one out of the way by beating Guatemala 117-32. The only real takeaway is that Lauren Cox did not play.

The next game is on Thursday at 6:00pm ET against Brazil, but as of this moment, FIBA has not posted a link.
Brazil beat Venezuela 68-50 and Izabela Leite had 11 points and 7 assists.

In the other group, Canada beat Mexico 87-56 with Aislinn Konig and Mikaela Brewer having good games. Valeria Tapia had a solid effort in the loss. Puerto Rico beat the hosts 88-74. Nikki Oppenheimer, who I believe was also involved in the USA U17 tryouts, had a big game alongside Angelique Rodriguez and Giolibeth Perez.

I think this covers all of the players with ties to the states part of the United States (ignoring the Puerto Ricans, who are all American citizens, that only appear to have ties to the island):
Brazil:
Maria Paula Albiero, Neuse Baptist Christian (North Carolina)
Izabela Nicoletti, Neuse Baptist Christian (North Carolina)
Izabel De Angelo, Carolina Waves (AAU)
Canada:
Mikaela Brewer, signed with Stanford
Halle Bovell, signed with Duquesne
Kendra Van Leeuwen, signed with Wisconsin
Aislinn Konig, signed with North Carolina State
Chile:
Vanessa Medina, Wasatch Academy (Utah)
Mexico:
Valeria Tapia, St. Joseph's Academy (Texas)
Puerto Rico:
Veronica Cancio, Winter Park (Florida)
Talia Roldan, Griffith (Indiana)
Giolibeth Perez, Ferguson (Florida), signed with Stony Brook
Angelique Rodriguez, Capital Prep (Connecticut)
Yari Martinez, Doral Academy Prep (Florida)
Nicolette Oppenheimer, Montini Catholic (Illinois), committed to Syracuse
India Pagan, Marine Science Magnet (Connecticut)
I just realized that Caribbean countries are already qualifying for the tournament two years from now, which again shows how much more international basketball other countries played compared to the United States.

I've noticed this before but really saw it today. Cox doesn't seem very tough. She gets lots of rebounds because she's taller than everyone else, but when the rebounds are contested she never seems to end up with the ball. It seems like more than bad hands. Just seems like she's not a fighter.
In contrast, Boothe and Cooks yank the ball out of the opponents' hands.
Boothe, Evans and Westbrook seem pretty impressive. As is Ramirez who is a lot more than just a shooter. She plays smart, plays good D, and has an all round game. Wish she was going to Notre Dame.

The US came to play today.
36-17 over Venezuela at the end of just 1 quarter of play.
And what a gorgeous one handed pass by Westbrook to Boehm for a layup as the quarter came to a close.

I don't think there was a single fan there at game's start. Looks like there might four or five now.
Rellah Boothe has tons of talent but her laziness may keep her from realizing her potential.

You can see Walker is a terrific player. Great moves, passing, defense, smart. All round a star in the making. Named the captain of the team. But wow, she needs to spend the rest of the summer in a gym just practicing shooting. She's now 7 for 32 shooting in 2 1/2 games. 0 for 7 today. 1 for 8 overall from the arc. She struggled making shots in the 3x3 tournament too.
I don't know if she's pressing too hard or what, but she is really struggling to get the ball in the basket even on simple open shots.

Oh, Cooks needs to learn that she's 6'4" but she's not Kevin Durant. If she keeps playing 25 feet from the basket looking for 3 pt shots, she won't realize her potential either.

What a nice game by Ramirez. 6/12 overall, 5/11 from the arc. 18 pts, 6 assists.
On one play Boothe got a rebound, made a nice 3/4 court baseball pass to Ramirez running down the sideline, who made a spectacular one handed touch pass right to Westbrook under the basket for a layup.
US kicked ass, 110-52. 65-31 rebounding advantage for the US. US shot 51% while holding Venezuela to 27%.

After a fairly competitive first quarter, the US completely unloaded on Puerto Rico 25-3 in the second quarter to take a 48-17 lead into halftime.
And to think that at one point it was tied 8-8. 40-9 since then.
US leads in pts in the paint, 36-2 and has a32-16 rebounding edge.

US leads 75-27 at the end of 3 quarters.
There is some serious talent on this US team. The talent gap between this team and the U16 team is like night and day.

At this point in the game (early 4th) US leads in fast break pts 41-0.
US takes off in full sprint every change of possession, often with 60 ft passes to streaking players. It's quite a show
Puerto Rico just can't get back fast enough on defense.

US wins 104-36.
Tomorrow at 8:15, the US will play for gold against the winner of tonight's Canada vs Brazil game. The US beat Brazil 80-59 in pool play earlier in the tournament and the US is playing better basketball now than they were then. I predict a big US win regardless of opponent.
Given recent history, I wasn't sure how this tournament would go. This looks like the good old days.
