It's kinda strange how they treated TEN and MO in the poll. They bolted TEN up 5 spots for beating MO while dropping MO off. A loss to a much higher ranked team isn't usually considered catastrophic.

I think the P12 teams will be on a yoyo string all season, and perhaps the beating up on each other will bring everybody down. Good that they at least had a few good OOC showings.

UConn still unanimous
Texas up to #4
Arizona State up to #14
Duke down to #16
UCLA and Syracuse in, California and Mimai (FL) out |
Wow. Getting blown out of the gym by an unranked team, you only drop 4 places? Yes, I know Syracuse is now ranked, but seriously - how can Duke remain in the top 20 after than stupendously horrific performance?

Strange! Coach looked totally detached too.......I guess she feels that she is totally secure. Perhaps she is.

And not even a single vote for Purdue? This is just another example of why I don't take these polls seriously.

Nor should you. Once the Conference championships are decided, then rankings might mean something; before then, polls are entertainment.

Can someone explain the justification for 12-7 Tennessee still being ranked?

I guess a question is, who is behind them that should be in front of them? GW maybe, but even that wouldn't bump Tenn from the top 25. Hard to justify any others.
Yes, they're disappointing, but their losses are against the #1 ranked schedule, and they have wins over Oregon St and Missouri. Who behind them can claim that?
So if I was a voter I'd probably be hard pressed to drop them three more spots even though my visceral reaction is that they shouldn't be ranked.

Who gave South Carolina a #1 vote?
Liking the poll this week, showing how tough it will be to get an at large bid this year. Last week of January, and 44 teams got votes.

Coaches poll out: http://espn.go.com/womens-college-basketball/rankings/_/poll/2
UConn still #1 and South Carolina is still #2. The Gamecocks lost only 15 points for their showing vs. UConn. Notre Dame gained only 10 of those points, while Baylor picked up 4.
Tennessee and Mizzou dropped out.
Duquesne and Oklahoma St. moved in.

Baylor was 33 pts behind ND last week, now they're 39 pts behind.
SCar was 30 pts ahead of ND last week, now they're 4 pts ahead.
I can understand the "why is Tenn still ranked" viewpoint given the attention paid to their highly visible struggles, but still, why does Missouri get the same number of votes? Tennessee has better wins against the #1 rated schedule and beat the heck out of Missouri at Missouri. There's a reason Tenn's RPI remains much higher than Missouri's. In this situation Tenn's high profile works against them.

The two best teams in the country without question are UCONN and ND. Period.

Louisville fan here....I thought that ND was a deserving winner over Cardinals a couple weeks ago, but on that night there wasn't much separating those two teams. Stating the obvious...it's UConn and then everyone else this year. ND might be the best of the "everyone else" group, but the gap between ND and UConn is huge, while the gap between ND and half a dozen other teams is pretty small.

Yes, I couldn't agree more. Buckeyes played ND ten weeks ago and it wasn't decided until our last shot by Kelsey, (for a tie), clanked off the iron with two seconds to play. It's true that ND was without their best player, but, it is also true that with the emergence of Cooper and the vast improvement of Hart, we are much better than we were on December 2.
As I said in an earlier post, UConn owns a penthouse in a 100 story building, and the rest of us start on the 60th floor and work our way down.
