First, let me congratulate OU on their solid OOC season play, as MAC representatives and in their own right now Joe, as I can't say anything like that during MAC Tournament play. Remember Vandy as always being a big, 3 pt shooting team, even when BG beat them in the NCAA Tourney, not making Melanie happy. Ahem.

The above link is the U of Toledo's outline of the coming game with the Bonnies, on their home court. Toledo has beaten them 3 times in the recent past. If the Rockets shoot and play throughout the total game like they did in their 4th quarter against Albany, they can make this a very competitive game, and possibly steal an away game. As their confidence rose, the Rocket women soared, freshmen through seniors. Go Rockets!

For the week, MAC team went 13-11 against D1 teams. That brings the season record to 30-26. Buffalo is the only undefeated team in the league, and their win today against Clemson gives the MAC its second win over Power 5 schools, versus 10 losses.

As noted on the above summary and stat column, Toledo fairly well matched St.Bonaventure, in most areas, excepting regular fgs, compensated by 3pt Toledo shooting. The Bonnies had more blocks, and, significantly, more foul shots. The Rockets had more rebounds.

The Rockets had 4 players in double figures, with Ana C. leading the way w/15pts. The Bonnies had just 3 double figure scorers. Toledo's Ana and Jay-Harriet also had some solid 3pt shooting. Woody hit a 3 as well. Both teams had proactive scoring benches. The major stat that came back to bite Toledo on their gluteus maximus was only 80% completion of foul shots to St. B.'s 90%.

Another area of concern were no.# of fouls called, for both teams. One of the Rockets more consistent scorers, Janice Monakana, fouled out. Both teams were called on fouls frequently, even St.B's top scorer fouled out, late. With the new rules regarding 2 shots when reaching the team 5 foul mark per quarter, the team w/highest %of completed fts won this game.

Perhaps more completed 2pt field goals might have aided a Toledo win, with a few more assists that =pts, plus the game they had already produced. You read the stats and draw your own conclusions.

Shooters, shooters, shooters is the name of future recruiting and winning(the taller the better so can't be blocked and can block, another Bonnie higher%). Noticed Toledo did not play man to man, often their defense in the past, although they did attempt a press in the fourth quarter. (also, I had to listen to their calls on game, or purchase games at every conference they play). As couldn't locate station for sometime, unsure about Rocket defense. Could not hear Coach Cullop's interview. Please read below for further elaboration on poster's competing demands this year.

Will report scores of other MAC Western Conf. games tomorrow.

Records against D-1 teams so far:

EAST:
Buffalo 6-1
Bowling Green 4-2
Miami 4-2
Ohio 4-2
Akron 1-4
Kent State 1-4

WEST:
WMU 4-2
CMU 4-2
EMU 2-1
BSU 3-2
NIU 2-3
Toledo 0-6

Ohio seems to be making progress. They won a mid-day schoolkids game yesterday against IPFW, 79-52. Kiyanna Black had a very efficient game, scoring 21 points on just 10 shots. Quiera Lampkins dropped another 14. Yamonie Jenkins continued to show that she had worked on her shot over the summer, and is firmly entrenched as the starting PG. Backup PG is still a problem - Mariah Harris gets most of the minutes there now, and showed flashes yesterday, but at this point still shows problems with her ballhandling and decision-making.

One good thing about the blowout is that it gave Ohio's freshmen a chance to play almost all of the fourth quarter. Lots of turnovers from that group, but Kendall Jessing looks like she could develop into the stronger post presence Ohio has lacked for some time, and Olivia Bower showed some effective scoring moves in the post. Might not be ready for prime time this year, though.

Above is a link to the Toledo WBB's schedule in the Arizona St Classic Tourney tomorrow. They will be playing Columbia for the first time ever as noted above. The link and time provides a channel that can be listened to in the Toledo area.

As information provided in twitter posts described a different time, am relatively sure it is in reference to MT. Will clarify at some point.

On Sunday, 12/6 they will play either Arizona State or VCU.

There is a short summary of the Rockets game against Dayton at home this past Wednesday included in above link. (I was unable to attend as my father had to be taken to a local emergency room at 1:30 am Wednesday morning. He is back home now. Taking him to outpatient surgery and involved in his care the last few weeks was unexpected and may interfere again in my ability to attend and report on games this year. My apologies. Am sure others here are in similar positions.)

Did watch parts of Dayton game later and read twitter posts. Unfortunately, the Rockets lost 83-57 at the Toledo home game. Freshman Hallie Printz and Senior Brenae Harris scored in double figures, scoring 13 and 10 pts, respectively. Hallie appeared to demonstrate what the future may have in store for that skillful player as a Toledo Rocket. Janice Monakana and Ana C., continued to demonstrate solid scoring and rebounding. Again, the Rockets 2nd half was quite strong, but Dayton's scoring run in the 1rst quarter especially, put a Rocket victory out of reach.

The Toledo Rockets won their game against Columbia, 88-72! Their "meat grinder" schedule paid off, with Breana Harris scoring 39 pts, the highest one player score amount since Naama scored 40 pts against UCLA in the WNIT Champ. win in 2011. Congratulations "B"! Of course, it was a total team effort with at least 2-3 other players in double figures.

Sophie Reecher, Ana Caposoto, Janice Monakana, and Jay-Ann Harris-Bravo all scored in or close to double figures, while double teamed. Freshmen and Sophomores were periodically subbed in, getting them more experience.

Am not going to give quote stats and or links until tomorrow-have learned my lesson well.

We play VCU who defeated Arizona ST. Will supply time in a.m. Again, it will be that ET vs MT issue. Had hoped our PAC station might carry it, but of course not.

Knew about the streaming, Joe, but didn't want to pay for another conference game, again. May tomorrow.

OT(Thanks for asking about my dad-he is stable and at home, glued to football games. Know many boomers & tail end boomers dealing w/same situations)

The ASU livestream is a freebie. I watched the first quarter of Toledo/Columbia yesterday, and it was video only, no audio. ASU's livestream site says the Toledo/VCU game will be streamed today.

From U of Toledo overview w/stats and interview w/Coach Cullop available.

Rockets play VCU at 2pm EST.

(I had copied this down from a Rocket web site early-think at first no one thought about game time moving due to win yesterday-my apologies belatedly)

Toledo wins the Arizona ST. Classic, running away with the game, 80-61.

Janice Monakana had her best game at Toledo, hitting effortless looking threes and drawing foul shots all day, followed by Jay-Ann Harriet, Ana and Breana again, with put backs and solid ball distribution by Sophie.

After the 1rst half, the score was 30-9, and at the end of the first half, the Rockets had 42pts to VCU's 30 pts.
The 3rd quarter rewarded Toledo, ending w/67 pts to VCU's 44 pt effort.

About half way through the 4th quarter the Rockets stood at 72 pts, VCU at 48 pts. Some subbing of freshmen started here, with 3 freshmen on the court after the 3 minute mark, but always leaving in 2 of the starters.

Will wait again to put up official box scores, but the '"Brits", per announcer, took over this game in the first quarter and never let go. Everyone's shots were red hot, including 3's, field goals, and high % foul shooting. Toledo was rebounding very well, and drawing fouls on made or attempted field goals. Except for a decent run by VCU in the 2nd quarter, their shots and defense seemed to have the opposite orientation.

Offering congratulations on both effort and playing consistently well from 1rst to last quarter, in both games, to earn the Tourney Trophy seems an insufficient expression for taking on the challenging teams Toledo played to be rewarded with this triumph. Words fail to convey the respect and awe the players and coaching staff this Toledo Rocket WBB program have earned from this admirer, either at their games or at the end of a long distance stream.

MAC ends the week with a 13-8 record against D-1 schools, with no games against Power 5 teams. For the season, the record is 43-34, and remains 2-10 against P5.

Ohio won at home today over St. Francis (PA), 91-65. On Thursday, the Bobcats looked very sharp in defeating IPFW, but today it looked like Ohio had exchanged the scalpel for a bludgeon. Lots of missed shots of every variety early on, with the sole effective starter being Quiera Lampkins, who scored the first 6 Ohio points and went on to total 17 in the first half. The other four starters were quickly given seats to be replaced by their backups, who played the majority of the half. That group ground its way to a 13 point halftime lead, mainly on the strength of more physical play than the Red Flashes were able or willing to muster.

The starters were given another chance to begin the second half, and took advantage of the opportunity. Kiyanna Black, who had gone 0-6 in the first half, was 3-4 in the second for 11 points. Yamonie Jenkins put on a clinic in press-breaking, repeatedly splitting and speeding past defenders and using a beautiful hesitation dribble to score or dish. By the end of 3, Ohio had expanded the lead to 23, and the game was over.

The rugged first half play came at a cost to St. Francis when Ohio's Hannah Boesinger dove for a loose ball and landed on the leg of Red Flash Samiah Bethel. From the way Bethel's leg bent, it was obvious that her knee had been injured, and one can only hope that it's not the three-letter diagnosis.

Rough week for the conference, capped by today's 0-4 record that brought the weekly total to 6-9, with an 0-3 record against P5 schools. For the season, the MAC is 49-43; 2-13 versus the P5.

Ohio was one of the losers today, suffering its first blowout loss of the season at Duquesne, 64-47. The Dukes are the best team the Bobcats have faced, featuring a couple of 6'3" posts that Ohio had to double defensively. That kept the post scoring under control, but it opened up the outside for some very good shooters. The Dukes took advantage, hitting on 8 of 17 threes. And the doubling didn't help Ohio's rebounding -- they were crushed by a 50-27 count.

Offensively, Ohio shot 3-25 from three, which are numbers that will doom them in any game. It wasn't just that they shot poorly (they did), but Duquesne's zone defense gave the Bobcats few good looks from behind the arc. Quiera Lampkins was again outstanding for Ohio, scoring 26 points on 11-17 shooting, but she got no help. Kiyanna Black shot 3-16, and no one else stepped up to fill the void. Ohio really needs at least one player other than Lampkins and Black to become a scorer, but so far no one seems to be up to the task.

A few games have passed since I last posted. Since someone asked, I had to ask Sallee who voted State to finish 6th and being the gentleman he is, Sallee obliged with his opinion. Even though the MAC did not tell him, he thinks it was one of the Directional Michigans and not the one we think. Because I am a lady will will keep the actual selection between us.

I cracked on Carmen Grande after her first game and boy has she done an 180 since. She is currently ranked in the top 20 for her ball handling skills and her poise level.

Nathalie Fontaine has had several 20+ point scoring games and was leading the nation in her free throw percentage earlier on in the season.

Ball State lost by six to Florida and then came back to defeate BEast up and comer Butler. The loss to day to Purdue was not as bad as it looked. Both teams played bare busted knuckle defense and Purdue won by shutting down Jill Morrison and keeping the D away from Ashley Morrissette and April Wilson.

I am stealing a graf from BSU website The Cardinals outscored the Boilermakes in the paint, 32-to-26 and controlled the boards outrebounding Purdue 33-to-27. Ball State shot 49.1 percent from the field and held the Boilermakers to 41.4 shooting from the floor. But the Cardinals 20 turnovers plagued them allowing Purdue to score 14 points off of Ball State's miscues.

This is going to be a fun season and even more so when MAC opens in a few.

Whoops, I miscounted yesterday. Northern Illinois actually won its game against Illinois State. So the MAC was 1-3 yesterday and is now 50-42 for the season. Guess I shouldn't try to count after driving in my least favorite city, Pittsburgh.

Michigan finishes their non-conference season with two MAC opponents, hosting Miami on Saturday and going to Eastern on the 23rd.

The U-Ms last faced each other in 2006, a trip to Miami that I'd rather forget Embarassed . U-M and EMU have played each other five times in the last four years (one was WNIT). EMU won the 2011 match-ups, but the Kim Barnes Arico teams have been slowly pulling away from the neighbor 5.5 miles east.

Bowling Green announced that Erica Donovan has left the team for personal reasons. That's a big loss for the Falcons, as Donovan was a preseason all-MAC pick.

And in other news, Eastern Michigan beat Madonna last night, 104-45. Congratulations! Rolling Eyes

Ohio upped its record to 7-3 with tournament wins yesterday and today. Yesterday the Bobcats beat host UNC-Wilmington, 75-53. The Bobcats were just too quick for the Seahawks, and repeatedly drove to the rim and scored against their man defense. It was only when the score was 30-10 early in the second quarter that UNCW switched to a 2-3, and that promptly sucked the life out of the Bobcats' offense. Ohio just hasn't shown the depth in 3-point shooting that it had last year, and Kiyanna Black is about the only player consistently scoring from long range. She hit 5 of Ohio's 6 threes for the game, with the team as a whole shooting 6-23 from distance. Still, they did enough to fend off the home team for the win.

East Carolina had routed Ohio at their place two years ago, and won a closer game last year in Athens. So it had to be satisfying for the Bobcats to claim a 64-61 win at the tournament today. Black again came out hot, scoring 17 in the first half that ended with Ohio up 43-34. But that was about it. She only scored 3 more points in the game, as both teams looked beat, playing on back to back days. I thought the Pirates would be able to use their superior size and strength inside to pull this one out, but good defense forced 20 ECU turnovers, and Ohio barely hung on for the win.

Ohio doesn't play again for 10 days. They are now 7-3. Middle Tennessee State, their next opponent, will be another big test.

For the week, the MAC was 6-5, with an 0-3 mark against Power 5 schools. That brings the season totals to 56-47 overall, 2-16 vs. P5.

For the last three seasons, Verdi's EMU team has played two to three non-D1 teams on the non-conference schedule. I don't get it. Confidence builder?

I don't get it either. It does nothing but artificially inflate player stats and coaches' win totals, and weakens the perception of the MAC. To borrow from PTI, if there was a living, breathing commissioner of the league, it wouldn't be allowed. But it seems to be spreading. By the end of this OOC, MAC teams will have played 8 games against non-D1 opponents as regular season games. EMU and WMU will each play two such games, and Ball State, Northern Illinois, Akron and Kent State one apiece. Tsk, tsk.
