Actually 1995 was the last year when it was on CBS. The semi's were around noon and 230 ET on Saturday before the men's semi's. The title game was on at 4 ET on Sunday.

Perhaps not coincidentally, it was also the last time the semis and finals were on consecutive days

And there are numerous games like that around country, and that of course is not counting when the day starts, if a game starts on the East Coast at 12, for a west coast team that is a 9, but the day starts with shoot around and/or film 7am or 8 am which is really 4am or 5am for the west coast players, and no one complains about that either.

Well... to be fair, *I* complain about that, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Ok, there were a few people who said something, but there wasn't a general consensus.

I wonder if the fans who complained about that were told to stfu, stop complaining, be thankful it's being shown at all, much less LIVE, and who cares if it's on back-back days?

My extremely boring take on the scheduling this weekend is that ESPN thinks that what it's doing will maximize total viewership, and that ESPN probably is right.

And, for what it's worth, it's exactly what is being done for the men's tournament both today and tomorrow. If you're a WCBB fan, you're actually going to have fewer overlapping games in the 3rd round to worry about than the men.

Boring...and accurate.

Some people seem to just look to complain about something.

Back to back, starting at 7 pm. That's tournament basketball.

Really? Did you go to Gampel at 7 Monday night? You going to Albany at 7pm Saturday?

"That's tournament basketball".

That's a pretty weak argument.

So should ESPN:

1) Play all games at 7 or 7:30 p.m. local time?

or

2) Play games earlier and later so they can be seen by more TV viewers?

I'm really an agnostic on this, but I think if we're going to complain, we should at least be consistent.

Imo, the S16 should be held Sat/Sun and the games should be played in succession throughout the day, tip times based on local time, in a 1-7p window, avoiding the 7p start on Sunday night.

Makes sense.

What about first-round games? All at night so fans can go, or spread out during the day on some weekdays?

Well, CBS adding the semifinals was part of the pact they had signed with the NCAA that gave them the entire tournament starting in 1991. They certainly were not going to show the Women's semifinals in prime time on Friday so they got moved to Saturday. It was a silly arrangement at times, especially when Western Kentucky and Southwest Missouri State tipped off at 930 am in LA in 1992 (the NCAA did deflect criticism by fans and media by continually saying how happy the teams are just to be playing). Things got worse for CBS when that game took forever to play and the Virginia-Stanford game tipped off way late and it wound up pre-empting most of the men's Final Four pre-game show. One has to wonder, given that 4 of the 5 title games in that period went down to the final seconds or overtime, that the format wasn't all that bad from a competitive standpoint.

And put on one of the most brutal displays of bad basketball you're ever likely to see at that stage of the tournament. 63 fouls, 57 turnovers, and running 2.5 hours of grinding with no OT.

R1's hectic shed. is much of the glory of MM, imo. Tip at noon....TV coverage is the priority. Avoid >8pm local starts in first 2 Rds when possible.

espn
espn2
espnU
espn classic
espn3

they have they means. they lack the will.
