Why is New Mexico in this tournament and not the WNIT.
They were 22 and 12 and 14 and 4 in conference.
They get great crowds to their games.

The rationale as explained on the Sanchez Sidelines section of the Lobo Lair chat site was as follows:
New Mexico was offered a road game by the WNIT, possibly one they feared losing. The WBI has apparently offered them home until they are beaten.
Thus, the athletic department saw the finances as better and Sanchez saw it as a chance to play more and practice more (as opposed to a possible first-round road knockout in the WNIT) to prepare for the future.
Fans were a little miffed that just 1400 showed up in the old gym, the Johnson Center, last night as opposed to Wise Pies Arena where the Lobos normally play.

Is this new? And what is this tournament's .... purpose (other than to let more teams play on....)?

I thought this tournament always was spendy for teams that wanted to host. Do the tournament organizers contribute more now?

Host teams have to offer a guarantee, $10k for first two rounds and $12k for the semis and finals, but then keep all the revenue including tickets, sponsorships, parking, concessions, radio and television rights. The road teams receive part of the guarantee; $7k for the first two rounds and $9k for the semis and finals.

The Teddy Bears won again, 73-71 over Marshall. They're in the Final Four, facing Siena on Wednesday.
