For a job like this I would only hire a coach with head coaching experience. If these so called top assistant coaches want a head coaching job in a power conference, prove your mettle at running a program.

17 of the last 20 national championships were won by teams with head coaches on their first head coaching job. Only three were won by coaches who were hired from other head coaching jobs (McGraw in 2001, Frese in 2006, and Blair in 2011).

Why would you prefer someone who has head coaching experience?

Because you have no record on which to judge an assistant coach. All you have to go on is your interview and what the head coach says, and if the head coach didn't like them already they wouldn't have been sitting on their bench. On the assistant coaching bio pages they will say "helped lead Missouri State to back to back conference championships". Jamelle Elliot's resume no doubt says "helped lead UConn to multiple national championships and two undefeated seasons". But how many people when discussing UConn during the 00's, after gushing over Auriemma, will also say "and a good amount of credit should go to Chris Dailey, Jamelle Elliot and Tonya Cardoza as well". Or if they do give credit to the assistants, how much do you give them?

But having said that, one of the assistants is usually labeled as being in charge of recruiting, so depending on how it works between head coach and recruiting coordinator with regard to recruiting, you may be able to give them a lot of credit for successful recruiting. And recruiting is way more important than coaching in my book.

Hmmm. That's actually not bad. But--zero years as a HC would prolly not fly in Athens.

I think most of the targets UGA has on their list still have teams that are still active in the post season.
