Apparently there aren't enough chartered flights available. Smile

Probably just that the NCAA hasn't chartered enough aircraft rather than the lack of available aircraft. Why do I suspect that this is just a cost issue and if the NCAA simply allowed teams who usually charter to make their usual charter arrangements and reimburse them there would be no problem.

I'm not sure I get this. I know we have traveled in the past on both the team planes of the Dallas Mavericks as well as the Phoenix Suns not to mention several other aircraft with various airline names on the side of the plane. I guess they must do things differently nowadays.

I'm confused. Don't the schools arrange and pay for their own charters?

What's the role of the NCAA in chartering planes for the tournament?

I expect those teams charter their planes out regularly as a normal business when not otherwise in use. You could probably charter it if you wanted to. They don't for example allow Oregon to use a Nike corporate jet or Ore St to use T Boone Pickens's Gulfstream 550.

The NCAA provides the transportation for the tournament.

I expect it's all about saving money and is cheaper than reimbursing schools. So they charter several jets and have them make multiple trips each day picking up and dropping off teams.

I'm pretty sure they also assign you to a hotel.

Yes.

The NCAA charters have been a problem in the past. In 2000 (not that I'm bitter!), the NCAA apparently assumed that Georgia would win the West regional and so set up the charters so that Georgia would leave the night of the game and so that Rutgers would not leave until the next day, so RU lost a day of practice for the Final Four after winning the regional final. Since the Final Four was Friday night/Sunday night in those days, RU basically had one day between arriving home and leaving, although at least it was a short trip to Philadelphia.
