Maryland's divorce from the ACC is finally a done deal.

ACC originally sued Terps for $157million; Terps counter-sued.

Today's settlement calls for the ACC to keep the $31million of UMD's money that they already have withheld (from payments which would have been due to MD if they were staying in the conf), and no additional payments will be due from UMD.

Sounds like a good resolution, and now all parties can move on.

This bears a striking resemblance to the settlement between Rutgers and the AAC (with fewer dollars), with the conference keeping what it has and the school just walking away.

I don't think either the conferences or the schools really want to take these cases to trial.

The ACC is getting $31M rather than $51M. They would spend literally millions going to trial, and more with the inevitable appeals, and waste untold amount of time of university presidents and other senior officials. It's not worth it. The time, distraction, and expenses aren't worth it even if you felt rock solid about winning. And there's always some risk. Although my impression is that the ACC didn't have much risk with respect to the $51M, and had none with respect to all the silly counterclaims.

That's why most civil cases settle.
