Interview with Matt Bollant

What does [Missouri transfer]Kyley Simmons add?
She’s a really good point guard. She’s a really good leader. We’ve had good kids here, but they haven’t always known how to lead, and she’s a good leader. Now we can say, “Follow Kyley. When we’re not in the gym, do what Kyley tells you to do.” She’s a leader; she’s a go-getter. She believes in herself and has that self-belief that “I’m getting this done.” She just has so much energy. Every day she comes in with joy and is so excited to practice. She wants to be in the gym all the time. |

Is women’s basketball, as a whole, in good shape?
I think so. I don’t think the game is broke at all. It’s just a different world we live in today. There’s so many more choices with entertainment that there’s going to be more of a battle getting fans. The Big Ten drew extremely well last year. We had crowds last year. We lost six straight, then we come home and we’ve got 3,000 people there. If we build this, they’ll come. |

Here it is...and it's a very good schedule IMO:
2014 Nonconference Schedule:
Nov. 14 - USC Upstate
Nov. 16 - Robert Morris
Nov. 21 & 22 - Hawkeye Challenge (UT-Martin/Dayton/Pepperdine)
Nov. 25 - Northern Iowa
Nov. 28 - Arkansas (South Point Thanksgiving Shootout - Las Vegas)
Nov. 29 - Gonzaga (South Point Thanksgiving Shootout - Las Vegas)
Dec. 4 - @ Louisville (ACC/Big Ten Challenge)
Dec. 7 - Colorado
Dec. 11 - Iowa State
Dec. 21 - @ Drake
However, only 2 true road games. Should be a pretty challenging schedule.

All the OOC games are winnable....L'Ville will be the toughest at the YUM! but lots of questions about the Cards; Iowas brings just about everyone back although I think they'll miss Mama Taylor's leadership.
Iowa beat Dayton (then ranked #14) last year in the same challenge.
Iowa lost to the Buffs last season in Boulder.
Iowa lost to Iowa State last year (the home team always seems to emerge victorious in the Cy-Hawk battle).
Gonzaga knocked Iowa out of the NCAAs two years ago in Spokane.

I'll be curious when all the schedules come out how many schools in the Big10 and ACC had their most difficult OOC game foisted onto them by the Challenge and not by choice.
Rutgers chose to play Tenn in addition to their UNC Challenge matchup, so they deserve a pat on the back.

On further review, Nebraska is adding 7 new players to the roster, so there may be some wisdom in going with a roster that isn't filled with top tier teams.

Incoming Iowa frosh getting experience in summer Game Time League.

[Forward Chase] Coley’s versatility stood out in high school and now it’s doing the same in the GTL, where she blocked at least five shots in the first half of Wednesday’s game.
Coley owns Minnesota prep records for blocks in a game, season and career. She ranks among the top three in state history for single-season and career rebounds.
But she’s also comfortable playing on the perimeter and shooting from 3-point range despite her size. |

[Whitney] Jennings finished her career with 2,641 points, the fifth highest total in state history. She recorded three triple-doubles and was a 2014 McDonald’s All-American selection committee nominee.
Jennings expects her role to change as a college point guard. Iowa already has one of the Big Ten’s top point guards in senior-to-be Samantha Logic.
“Obviously, I know that scoring is not going to be my role as much in college,” Jennings said. “I’ll be more of a true point guard. But I’m really looking forward to learning a lot from Sam this year and just getting better.” |

Camille Redmon, of Purdue, has left the team. She graduated in May and has decided to stop playing basketball and move on.

Gosh, I guess I can contribute to this thread now.
RU's two incoming JUCO transfers, both 3-point specialists, have arrived on campus.
Deep threats
Of course, you don't know how much PT they'll get from CVS until they learn the defense, but they could help fill a big hole in the RU offense, which already was much improved last year.

It almost seems too easy to predict what the fate of the Rutgers additions will be.

RU has mixed results with transfers, to say the least, but CVS seems pretty interested in improving the 3-point game this year. I honestly don't expect them to play very much, given who's coming back, but the other thing with CVS is that she often rewards players who work hard in practice, so you never know.

MSU updated their schedule.
Not necessarily surprising is that Kiana Johnson, oft-suspended starting point guard is no longer with the team.
PG duties will most likely fall to Sophomore Tori Jankoska, who last year was second on the team in scoring.
OTher returning starters include F Becca Mills and F Aeriel Powers. Key reserves are P Jasmine Hines and G Brandeis Agee. Top newcomers are W Jasmine Lumpkins and Lexi Gussert. Maddie Williams is also listed as a senior on the roster.

Aerial Powers is one of the two best names in the college game today, the other being Precious Person.

Any *buzz* yet on Indiana's new freshman, Tyra Buss?
Her bio excerpts are pretty remarkable:
Quote: |
... holds Illinois girls basketball records in career scoring (4,897), career free throws made (1,185), highest career scoring average (38.0),....her career point total ranks as the second highest scoring total nationally ever by a high girls basketball player, ranks second nationally all-time in career free throws made,... as a senior, averaged 45.8 points,.... she scored 60 or more points in a single game three times in 2013-14, including a career-high 66 points vs. Princeton on Dec, 28, 2013 ... was the state runner-up in the IHSA's state 3-point competition ... |

I suspect the addition of Rutgers and Maryland, while they don't feel "right" to this old Big 10 (Badgers forever!) person, will help WBB recruiting conference-wide in the way adding Penn State did not. Penn State just did not have the cachet that the other two schools have in terms of WBB.
