I'm betting that Kelsey Mitchell and Waterman start from day 1, and that at least one, if not both, of Holland and Cooper start from the first day they become eligible.
I think if you are McGuff and want this team to move forward quickly, you need to roll the dice and go with the newcomers and just accept the mistakes that come from them being newcomers.
If you go with the returnees, there's no reason to expect any big improvement from last year.

With the number of newcomers available, McGuff could feasibly do that.

I think the newcomers represent enough of a step up in talent level that it will outweigh the lack of experience, especially for a coach who is building for the future. Might as well roll the dice this year.

It's late, and I have had a few, but when I saw these comments it brought me out of my chair. As a fan I kind of always "overshoot the runway" in my expectations for the buckeyes.........Your two comments really focus this next season for me.
First, I agree that it is "feasible" because of the new talent.........more talent, I believe, than we have had here since the Katy Smith era........and second, because this coach IS going to "roll the dice". No doubt about it!
From his hire, I have been convinced that coach McGuff understood far better than the AD that hired him or the vast majority of people at the university, that this was HIS chance to wake a sleeping giant........I understand just how corny that sounds, but I have been hoping for a long time.........and also I am from the corn belt.
Thanks for your insight.

" I'm curious if Kalpana Beach ever makes it back. She started as a frosh in the front court and showed promise but the past two years she has been sidelined with injuries. "
Above is a quote from NoDakSt.
Amazed that you would know that name from two seasons ago!........you must be WAY into Wbb...........Anyway the consensus is that she will try it again. She was VERY good as a freshman and if she can have that kind of success again it would be delightful to see and a huge help to the team.
So, hope for the best.

...the rest (egad, there are a lot of them too)
I think the B1G will be surprised by the Rutgers style of grind it out play.
Love Theriot and they will be good, but without Hooper, well, I'm not convinced. I actually didn't realize Hooper was as good as she is, but someone who plays as well as she does as a rookie in the W, well, my theory is that her team will miss her. Which is also why I plunk Maryland that low.
I love Banham and Zahui but they haven't proved themselves as a team yet so they are kind of the wild card in my mind. |
Your list is very interesting. As you might imagine, I see OSU being a little higher.............as for Rutgers, they may be the ultimate winners, but a look at last years results suggest that they may have a hard climb.
Last year Rutgers went 0-5 against top 25 rated teams. Of course, playing UCON twice is 2 of those 5, but even throwing those 2 out the record is 0-3.
Now the teams you have ranked Rutgers ahead of have records against top 25 also. NU 4-3, Iowa 4-6, Minn 0-5, MSU 3-6, OSU 3-11. Now the Rutgers record looks solid against Minnesota but a little iffy against the others.
Then I believe you also mentioned that the BIG may be surprised at Rutgers hard grinding style. You may certainly be right. It has always been my opinion, however, that the BIG is a VERY hard grinding league as the talent level is never quite as good as the eastern schools.
We know how C Vivian coaches............We had better be ready for hard grinding!

People may be surprised a bit at RU's style on offense - they moved the ball much better last year, and scoring was up significantly. If they could shoot threes (well, if they'd take threes - they actually led the AAC in 3-point percentage for a while on a *very* small sample), they could be really dangerous.

Exactly, and we have added two JuCo 3-point specialists, and also I'm almost certain that our returning guards will be working on their 3-point shot.
Also Rutgers will be looking to run the ball every chance we get, and we no longer look to take the shot clock down to 10 seconds that much either, CVS has really loosen up and let our offense be more free-flowing, pretty much if a player has a good shot, then take it.
I picture that our offense next year will be going through Tyler Scaife & Kahleah Copper even more so than it did last season.
What I think B1G teams will have trouble with is our team speed, not just on offense, but on the defensive end as well. That's where the grind will be for other teams.
Also about us being 0-5 against Top 25 teams, that is true but it's also true that we were a pretty young team last year with no seniors. We lost to LSU by 1 point, and then we lead for most of the game in one of those games against L'ville. So I wouldn't really look at those results and determine how good this year's team will be because I look at those games as learning experiences that helped us later on in the season at the games at BGSU, and UTEP.
We'll see, I just want the season to be here already!

I do hope the best for Kalpana as well. I remember that she was initially a verbal to Notre Dame (does that go back a ways, or what) but then decommitted and reupped with Foster and the Bucks. I would like to see what she can do but I really think, outside of Alston...that the newbies are going to be seeing the bulk of the playing time at the OSU

Team speed and Rutgers should NEVER be used in the same sentence. Or the same paragraph.

And this person's list doesn't include Penn State or Purdue, both teams that lose some seniors but may actually turn out to be better "teams". I have a feeling the order of finish won't look like this at all. Michigan will also have something to say about it as they will be improved as well.
In addition, Northwestern had some excellent wins last season and have potential to be pretty strong again.

I like Michigan too.....KBA has brought in kids she likes but she's also getting kids from the old regime to play really well. I think they will be dangerous.
On the otherhand, I don't see Coach Joe as being capable of leading a team, a shame really because N'Westerns sophomore class appears pretty talented.

I am excited for the expansion. It was inevitable the way things were going and it's better for the Big Ten to be ahead of it rather than left behind.
