Glenn, How do you watch all of these high school games? Watching this video was brutal. I have seen better school yard pickup games. Nurse to my eyes was not very impressive in this video. I would have never guessed she was on the Canadian national team. How team recruiters see potential in HS players is amazing. I was high on Nurse from what I read. After watching this video, I hope she is very coachable.

I figured out what that game was. It was a JUEL of Ontario league game, sort of the premiere AAU circuit in the Province of Ontario. Nurse was playing for the Hamilton Transway team, which finished the season first in the league at 25-1, against the Oakville Venom, which finished 4th at 18-8.

http://www.juel.ca/standings.php

Seven seniors on Transway are going to college programs, four of them to USA D1.

http://www.juel.ca/currentSeniors.php

Nurse led the league in scoring at 25.8 ppg. Here are the leader stats:

http://www.juel.ca/stats.php

So the game I linked above shows Nurse on what is almost an Ontario Province All-Star team, only once defeated in two years of play. To me, the play quality looked about like the junior varsity level for high school teams around the greater NYC environs. My conclusion is that Canadian GBB is low quality.

I couldn't consistently watch GBB of that quality. I primarily follow top players in the NYC area who may be of interest to UConn, plus nationally ranked players who come into the area for major tournaments.

I call my basketball self Magic Bus Basketball, partly because of the Woodstock van I drive and partly because I look for "magic" in high school players.

Evaluating players is simple. If they make me go "wow" internally on any sort of play three times in a game -- whether offense, defense, scoring, passing, anything -- they have what I call "magic". Sometimes I see magic right away -- less than five minutes for Bria Hartley and Breanna Stewart. Others take a few games, such as Stefanie Dolson. So far, I've seen no magic in videos I've watched of Kia Nurse.

Re Canadian teams: Every once in a while, one of the top teams comes to the Nike TOC with a glittering record -- and at best, goes 2-2.

We get about one a year in the West Coast Jamboree and generally they're very weak. This year, though, my team was surprised by a team that we thought we'd handle pretty easily, but had to pull the game out in the last two minutes.

Still, in general, the level of play is not the same.

Great illustration, by the way -- Mechelle doesn't like me that much anyway, so she'd probably be happy to wield the whip.

HERE'S a nice article with lots of good pictures of Nurse.

I think I chose Connecticut because its an opportunity of a lifetime, Nurse said during the signing ceremony held at More. They have great coaches and a great team. And they play against the best players in the country.

Nurse says she has dreamed of playing for Connecticut since she was in Grade 7.

Below is a 10 minute video of Nurse (#11, black, for St. Thomas More) in a high school game against St. Mary's in October 2013, which St. Mary's won, 72-70.

St. Mary's has a trio of stars called the Belles of St. Mary's. They are going to D1 schools in the U.S.: Vermont, Iowa and Mt. St. Mary's.

In this video Nurse looks better than in the AAU video. She misses her first two drives and is then shown making her next seven or eight shots. Keep in mind, however, that this high school video is essentially an "all makes" video for all players, whereas the AAU video was more of a makes and misses video.

Some potential tendencies of Nurse become ascertainable from these videos (and a couple of others I'm still looking for).

- She does not show the push speed or ankle-breaking moves of of a fast U.S. guard.
- She looks to be almost exclusively right-handed and right-sided.
- She often takes an unusual layup form -- sort of a line drive shot put from shoulder level, rather than a long arm extension to the rim. And she sometimes does this a step or two away from the usual layup take-off point, a place from which other players might take a teardrop, floater or pop shot.
- Her defense looks typical of a U.S. high school star. Needs improvement.
- Her jump shot form is more the front-of-face set shot type than the over-the-forehead male type.

Thanks for the footage, GMAC, even though it is mostly a drag to watch.

Based on the limited footage I've seen of her and that of HS Chong, I'd say Chong looked ~5x better.

This is obviously just a quick, superficial observation, but she reminds me somewhat of Ashley Valley. Shocked

Nurse is one of 20 players (Achonwa injured) competing right now for a spot on the Canada SWNT to play in the Turkey Worlds. The team should be selected today or tomorrow. This roster says she's 5-10.

She looks MUCH better in this video than the previous one.

Would like to see her in a national team video if anyone has one.

Nurse was named as one of the 16 roster players (and eight guards) for the SWNT's three exhibition games against Brazil. The roster will have to be pared to 12 for the Turkey Worlds.

Not knowing that much about international play, Kia Nurse being just 17 on the senior team is that common or unusual?

Guess it is at least for Canada as Kia Nurse was far and away the youngest player on the senior Canadian Women's team. The closest to her is Natalie Achonwa at 22 years of age. Kia was 17 on the team last year and average 10 points per game. Not bad for a young'n.

We may get to see Nurse in CT in Sept. The US National team is playing an exhibition against Canada in Bridgeport on Sept.15.

If Nurse starts at PG and still has her pants on at halftime she'll get an A.

Nurse missed last night's game to attend her high school graduation. In the second game her numbers were OK.

A blog on UConn women's basketball.

UConn's Nurse delivers for Canada

After missing the first of the three international friendlies against Brazil so she could take part in her high school graduation, UConn incoming freshman Kia Nurse returned in time to take part in the second of the exhibitions on Friday.

Nurse had 10 points despite not shooting the ball particularly well to go with two rebounds, two assists and a team-high three steals in the 79-72 victory.

The third and final game will be played on Saturday.

Can't take any more of this terrible game. Canada leading Brazil by about 13 half way through the third quarter.

Nurse hasn't played much. Didn't start but was first sub in. Got three dumb fouls in the first half and sat a lot. Took one shot so far and hit it, a three. Didn't do much of anything else as of now. Hope someone posts the box score.

Here is the box for Canada vs. Brazil III:

http://www.fibalivestats.com/matches/45140/12/10/19/27lCJioYNJqY/

Nurse had eight points on 2-5, 1-2, 3-6 shooting, with one rebound, no assists and one turnover.

The two teams were really bad.

Watching UConn has spoiled me . LOL

Nurse didn't get very involved on offense but seemed very active on defense, with good footwork and switched off well. She also took a few shoulder blocks while cutting and didn't flinch. I'd say she has a college-ready body coming to UConn, something we haven't seen from Chong yet.

I don't think Canada has made it's final cut yet and it looked like there was a lot of substitutions. Canada is currently ranked 9th in the world by FIBA.

These games are tantamount to scrimmages so one can't judge the true quality of the teams or lack thereof. Just watched again the documentary on the Dream Team. They were beat the first time they played in a closed door scrimmage by a group of College all stars. Just say'n.

That's an excellent stat page, which I think can shed lots of light on Nurse's potential. It lists 49 games that Nurse has played on the Ontario Provincial Team and the Canadian National team. That's a lot more than one college season of data. Here are Nurse's stats over those 49 games:

12.7 PPG

41.5 FG% (207-499)

32.2 3FG% (37-115). An average of O.76 3FG made per game.

3.3 RPG

1.4 APG

2.8 TOPG

O.51 A/TO

Mostly from these stats, plus a few video games I've seen, I'd conclude that Nurse:

- Was a decent scorer for a point guard in those 49 games, though there's no way of ascertaining the level of competition. Some international teams are really good, others really terrible.

- Had an okay FG% for a guard.

- Had a below average 3FG% even by high school standards.

- Had an extremely poor record for assists, turnovers and A/TO.

From these stats and some optics, I'd say she has a very, very long row to hoe to make it as either a point guard or shooting guard at UConn. Unless she improves dramatically in those areas, I would project her as a bench player below the top 8 of the rotation. Chong, Edwards and Ekmark are all likely better shooters, and Chong is certainly a far superior passer.

Nothing in Nurse's seven game performance at the Worlds change my preliminary conclusions above. I don't see her as a strong candidate as either a three-point SG shooter or an effective PG passer at UConn, based now on 56 games of statistics and several games observed.

In the Worlds, Nurse averaged 1.1 assists per game, sixth best on the Canadian team. She shot 38.3% from the floor and 23.1% (3-13) on three-point shots.

She is a hustler and hard-nosed defender with strong general athletic skills, who could be a very good utility player on UConn's elite team.

She is 18 years old, never played a minute of college ball, received the plaudits of foe and friend alike. She is the starting point guard on an ascending Canadian team and held her own against some of the elite guards in the world and based on that you are projecting she is going to be serviceable at best in college. She needs some refinement as all freshman do. I would feel very comfortable if she is deemed heir apparent to Moriah Jefferson.
